Does anyone think that Calvin Johnson can be used more effectively. One way I thought that he could be used better is when Tech gets near the endzone and they try to pass to him. The last two years we have been throwing over the top of the defenders so he could use and height and jumping ability to come down and score. This usually worked 50% or more of the time. However, I thought it would be better to send Calvin on slant routs to the corner of the endzone as usual but then have him cut back towards Reggie, so he could throw a line drive to Calvin. This would probobly be a better idea if the defender is leading in front of Calvin.

Well, defenses know they're probably going to see at least one fade route to Calvin per goalline series - the upside of the fade is it's either a touchdown or an incompletion (unless it's significantly underthrown, it's not going to be intercepted). A slant in a goalline situation is very high risk - the defenses are compacted due to the short field and Calvin's likely going to see a corner on the inside and a LB (if the route is to the middle of the field, like a slant) or a S (over the top, fade or post route) on the outside.

Remember the post in the NC State game - INT - because the defenders were bunched up around him. And the quick out in the UGAg game - the defender (Jennings ?) jumped the route and made the INT - if we throw a fade there, tie game because Calvin would've only had single coverage from one of the safeties.

Calvin Johnson will be used most effectively when he is hit in stride and scores so that we don't have to throw the fade in goalline situations. My hope is that we have enough confidence in our O-line so that we don't have to rely on this (confidence because our line is that good - not saying it is, just saying I hope it is). It's actually good that our opponents will be looking for the fade - it pulls at least 2 defenders toward the corner. I would like to see the "fake fade" a couple of times resulting in a score by Reggie (everybody KNOWS what's coming as soon as the ball is snapped and Reggie steps back - use that to our advantage).

I know the fade has worked well for us (not sure it is 50% though), but it is just SO expected now that I just get a bad feeling everytime we throw it in the endzone. As far as throwing it underneath, as CB said, it is even more dangerous. I've seen way too many interceptions (or near interceptions) in goalline situations the past few years. Half the time you're going to be hoping that the ref calls interference when Calvin tries to come back but can't and the ball is intercepted (Miami last year, etc. - but this was just an underthrown ball, still applies though). Based on our past "luck" with the refs, I'm not sure I like our chances there.

Calvin usually gets the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the refs - fans of other team will be quick to point out the he often pushes off (or at least appears to).

If our OL is as improved as advertised , opponents will begin to pay for the double teaming of CJ.Gosh ,I cant wait!!

Calvin Johnson is an amazsing athlete.....you should read the article on gojacekts.com in Jaime's mailbag there's a GREAT article on GT. Jaime mentions that Calvin is 6'5 238 lbs. and recorded a 45 inch verticle leap recently.....also states that Calvin is at another level when compared to other college athletes in the nation...... We've got one last shot of "letting the good times roll" with him this year b/c I think we will be watching him on Sundays come next year....Reggie and the gang let's all come together to make this YEAR REALLY SPECIAL & ONE FOR THE RECORD books for CALVIN and FOR GT....GO JACKETS!!!!!
