Can GSU end Ugag's NC campaign before it starts?

I heard an interview with Chris Hatcher on the radio in Macon yesterday. He was asked about his season opener in Athens by a Ugag homer radio guy. He said they were going to go in there with only one intention and that was to beat the Georgia Bulldogs.

Could they do it?

I think so. They beat Appalachian State last year (Hatcher's first year) who as you know beat #5 Michigan in the opener. GSU should be improved in Hatcher's second season. Their QB can run and pass which is always a wild card just like it was in the App St./Mich game. Hatcher will definitely have them believing in the locker room that they are going to win the game. OMfreakinggosh would that be sweet or what? GSU--> :nutkick:<--Ugag :fingersx:

The key element here is how many of U[sic]GA's players will be suspended for the first gmae?

I hope not.

I would prefer that we take care of that ourselves. Not before it starts but right at the point when they are so close they can taste it - we just crush them with 80,000 jaw-dropped rednecks looking on in stunned silence.

And I can't think of anyone more suited for the job than CPJ.

I hope they do.

If I had to pick a team other than us to do it this year, it'd be Georgia Southern.

Well, that is more a statement of the stupidity of polls until well into the season and how overrated the big ten is (and how, despite getting their butts kicked by legit teams O$U is ranked #2). The big ten is two cupcakes short of a bakers dozen.'

That being said, I hope the Eagles give U[sic]GA's season a bird poop facial.

One reason they cannot beat UGA - depth. Div1aa teams may have good to great players on their first string, but the drop-off is big when looking at the first string. The first half MAY be close, but the final score will be a blowout in UGA's favor.

By the same token, UGAG will have depth issues as well. Between arrests and injuries, they will be sallow at several positions as well.

Why do people quote preseason polls?

"#5 Michigan"

Well Kyle, probably because it's the preseason :dunno:. Michigan didn't finish #5 in the country but did finish up pretty respectable (don't remember ranking). Ugag's starting with a high preseason ranking, but may very well not end up that way. Thus the correlation with Michigan and Ugag's high preseason ranking and the correlation with App State and GSU.

Why do people say something meaningless without talking about the meat of the subject????

If there's one thing I hate, it's people who judge other people ... and GTKyle. j/k ;)

I'm sure people would've thought the same thing about App State and Michigan last year with depth being the issue and blowout likely and all that. But, App State's QB and the rest of their offense obviously weren't listening. Michigan had the high preseason ranking for the same reason Ugag does this year ... VERY good returning starting running back, good returning QB, etc. With the parity in college football, there's no way to say GSU cannot win because of this and that. Of course, I think Ugag will win. But, the point was just to say GSU could do it. Hatcher's interview just got me fired up thinking about the possibility.

It's just a pet peeve of mine I guess. Those polls have very little basis to them. Michigan had done nothing on the field to have deserved a #5 ranking. Preseason polls are all for hype.

I agree.

Their only point of validity might be that they are somewhat based on what a program has coming back from the year before.

GSU can beat UGA, but it isn't likely. The deciding factor will be if GSU's defense can stop UGA's offense. In previous years, GSU's offense was able to score on UGA's first string defense, but the GSU defense had no answers. If GSU's new "Hatch Attack" is just as hard to defend as the TO was and GSU's defense can keep the game close, then it might happen.

GSU's defense is suppose to be strong this year, but I don't know how it will matchup with UGA's offense.

GSU lost it's Walter Payton Award winner from last year (Jayson Foster), so they will have a huge gap on offense, but they just got Antonio Henton from tOSU.

I would be more than happy to have UGA have two loses to in-state schools.

One thing... I'm from Macon so i was pulling hard for Hatcher to come to GT... also after hearing PJ was hired i loved his hire more than if we got Hatcher. Hatcher IS a GREAT football coach. I think if he gets a D1 chance he will really turn heads. BUT... he will not beat the mutts. I cant spit out numbers right now but over half his team this year will be freshmen/soph. with a sprinkle of transfers. They signed like 30+? players last recruiting season. Who will be true freshmen this year? With like 65 schollies? minus that in probation.
Given GSU has 22 starters that are upperclassmen (which i doubt) i'd believe there is no proven depth to back the starters up. I think it goes like this. GSU will look alot like Hawaii did last year in the gaggers bowl game.

It would be better if UF and ugag traded opps. cut right to the chase and played each other twice!

However, I would love the upset and readily eat the crow pie that was served to me.:fingersx:

Nice image, but I'd prefer for UGA to be 0-and-whatever by the time we play them.

Could GSU win, sure.
Should GSU win, yes.
Will GSU win, No.

if it is with in 21 points, it will be a moral victory for GSU :(

I dunno about the 21 points. I see the mutts winning without any doubt, but if Hatchers guys are in form they're going to put up enough points to make it look respectable in the box score.

That said, go Eagles, I'll root for the underdog most any day.

Having watched Hatcher's team play Elon last fall, an offensive game that went into overtime, I don't give them a good chance at an upset.

UGA will score 49 to 56. GSU will put up 24 to 28. I'd set the line at 25 points.
