Why is that many, many (most really) coaches call for a meaningless running play with (say) 18 seconds on the clock before halftime (say the score is tied) with the ball on their own 14 yard line. I have NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER seen this running play bust it for 50-60 yards to get into field goal range, but I have seen this type of play resulting in a fumble which gave the opponent a short field goal and 3 points. Is their an "obligation" by the head coach to show the fans that the team is not "throwing in the towel"? Do they think we are that unfathomably stupid beyond repair? I guess they must. Just blows my mind how STUPID this is.
And another thing - why is it if a team is stopped at the 1 inch line on 4th down - when the opposing team gets the ball the refs are suppose to rotate the ball 180 degrees, correct? - yet in this instance rather than rotating the ball 180 degrees and leaving it (where only the fron nose of the football is sticking out of the endzone - now going the other way down the field) the refs always "push" the FOOTBALL OUT SO THAT THE ENTIRETY OF THE FOOTBALL IS IN THE FIELD OF PLAY.
How incredibly, mind-numbingly, stupid is that? Why does the team getting the ball get the extra one foot of "PUSH"? I guess the rulesmakers must think that the average football fan is truly out of touch with reality -I guess it must be that if they didn't move the entirety of the football out of the end zone that most of the fans will think that the ball is actually in the endzone when obviously it isn't!
Why do we put up with this insane crap?
