Sorry to have to post this but I'm just now getting caught up on the last couple of days.

Did Braine actually come out and say he doesn't expect to win a conference title in the next 5 years, or are people just inferring that from his comments? Hopefully he's on his way out the door if he actually said that.

Re: Read it and weep....

Can you imagine the Chairman of the Board of a publicly traded company issuing a similar statement?

We've got investors from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and they have lost touch with how tough it is to run a business these days. We may declare a dividend from time to time but don't come to expect it.

Re: Read it and weep....

I wonder how the athletes feel when they hear that they can't expect to have a 9 win season but every ten years or so.

Re: Read it and weep....

That's ok, i heard we would never have a winning season while i was there so i took it as a challenge. Let's give these kids a little more credit for thinking on their own.

Bull. He's extended the contract of a coach that he believes will try to exceed his expectations but live within the limitations that have been set.

Plus he has one more year. The new guy can come

in and say We Will Win!

Rah. Rah. Rah.

I imagine the five year contract more than offsets the comment. Of course I'm not justifying it.

Crew, I think you're on to something and it occured to me earlier today: Could we be witnessing the most selfless, fall on your sword act in NCAA?

Hear me out: You're an AD with one year left on your contract. Your football coach has just received a 5 year extension at what has been viewed as a suspicious time in the season. You saw what happened to Syracuse and Pasqua(however you spell it) and want to head it off now.

You come out and make an outrageous statement like was made, and magically no one is talking about the extension. You've set the precedent that it can't be done so when the next AD comes in and says "oh yes it can" the fans will say in unison "damn straight". In the meantime, your football coach now has a quiet couple of years to continue what he's doing in order to solidfy the team (recruiting, etc.)

Could be a brilliant, selfless move.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hugelaugh.gif

Or, as has been pointed out on the Hive,

it helps put pressure on the Hill. If GT Alumni are not OK with what he said, they will want to fix 'it'.

It may actually be a brilliant move on several levels. But I'm not ready to make that call.

Bottom line...it does not matter what anyone says.

I can tell you thet Chan loves GT, loves the players, loves the students..and wants to win every game in a big win. I will also add that our players do as well...and I am proud of the way the team and staff represent our school.

They think they can win every game...and want to...regardless of what anyone expects of them.

That would be the only thing that would make any sense. There are some things you just can't say.
