I think all the suspensions were underclassmen - freshmen and sophomores, IIRC. He is just sending a message of toughness without having a huge effect on the starting lineup of the team.

Maybe.

Charlie strong tried that same tactic and look how that turned out for him.
 
I went to a ThugU - Mountaineers Thursday night game about 8-10 years ago in the old OB, when I was working in Miami. The stadium served beer to those thugs until the 4th quarter and they were an out of control, dangerous bunch. They were yelling, "Kill those Mountainqueers!" the entire game.
