This is what I gathered from the call-in-show. Thanks to 790 for hosting this.

CG Call In Show
1-888-ISP-RADIO

CG – Good win. He has not seen a bad win. We got a chance to play a bunch of people.
All 3 phases played fairly well in the Vandy game.
We were able to find out how AJ Suggs was going to react.
Saw how the defense would communicate with the new system in place.
Saw if the ST would play up to CG’s expectations.

Charles: Stadium seems fragmented with band and students separated in the North and South.
CG: We wanted to create problems for opposition on both ends of the fields from a noise standpoint.

Create penalty laps for committing pre-snap penalties. 10 of 12 penalties were pre-snap penalties.

The only other 2 penalties were the Unsportsmanlike penalty on Hollings and holding on Watkins and were debatable.

CG was a little disappointed in getting pressure on the QB from the front 4 from time to time.

Played such a base defense last week that we didn’t have to do too much.

Don’t get too bent out of shape about recruiting right now. Don’t look for a lot of Ga guys for GT right now due to the academic requirements. Ga. had the lowest SAT score in the country this year. We will recruit GA. but will also go nationwide to find the right guys.

The biggest thing in recruiting is not how the recruiting services rate your class but it is about who can help you win championships 2 to 3 years from now.

What we saw from playing a lot of guys was that guys who had never played in ballgames get some game experience. The best thing was to have the 2nd string OL get some playing time and will pay dividends down the road.

CG thought that both Eric Henderson and Travis Parker looked good and was glad for them to get some quality playing time.

He felt that getting up early on Vanderbilt helped accomplish the same thing as having a preseason game.

Ather Brown did an excellent job and CG thought he led the team in tackles. Anthony Lawston played well especially on special teams. He went down and really laid some people out on the ST plays.

J. Smith has practiced both days this week and looks between 95-100% now, but not 100%. Need to get him back in the flow of the offense to see what he can do.

Duke had 21,000 when the y won last week. That was only 5K more than UConn will have. The UConn game will look like it has more though because the stadium will be full instead of half empty. Bottom line is that no matter where you play it, the field is 120 yards long and you still have to play the game.

Believes Nate Curry may be able to get back by the UNC game realistically if not a little earlier.

UConn is talking smack up there this week. They said that they had BC down last week and that they are going to get GT down this week and finish the job.

CG said that UConn will line up 8-9 men in the box and dare you to throw the ball deep and outside. See if you are good enough to execute that. Their defense dictated the tempo of the BC game last week.

CG said if he was in Edsall’s shoes, he would be making sure that T. Hollings would not be able to run up and down the field. He would be trying to deny GT the run game. If they put 9 guys in the box, we can’t beat our heads against the wall trying to run, we have to throw the ball in that case.

Commented on Vandy only converting 1 out of 14 on 3rd downs. Wound up +38% on 3rd down conversion percentage. Also commented on Nathan Burtons interception, he said that you won’t find a much better interception than the one Burton had.

Need to make the noise on 3rd down nasty. CG wants the fans to get louder, especially on third down.

Tony Hargrove is on target to be an NFL Defensive End. He can run like a deer and has a great motor. Only time will tell since he is only a sophomore. Feels that he and Gathers will compliment each other more and more this year.

Right now everything is focused on Gathers like it should be until Tony proves himself. Hopefully by midseason he will come around. Wes thinks we will start seeing 2 tights by the end of the year to combat this.

The game this weekend will give us great exposure to the northeast this weekend.

GREAT RECAP!

THANKS!!

My favorite line was from CG. One caller asked Wes why we were going to UConn to play in a 16,000 seat stadium. Wes replied with his usual answer (GT wanted an away game, UConn would return 2) and CG chimed in with "they are keeping score up there aren't they" just to remind everyone that this is one of our 12 games this year and is as important as all of the others. He also mentioned if they would line-out a field in the park GT would play. Sounds we are ready to hit some people other than our own.

Thanks Buzz4him, I heard bits and pieces of it on lunch your report hit on everything I heard. Good job.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">Couldn't agree more with that. Fans need to get into on 3rd down. And then chant RHINO! on 4th!!

Great report.
