Honoring his commitment to be at Lunch Bunch today, he is there right now. Takes a lot to go and do that after what just happened.

***Dan is meeting at 1 with the players to discuss the bowl coaching situation.

I hope he is treated well and respectfully. I spoke to him in April (he came to address the DC club) and he is very gracious to the fans and seemed to enjoy hanging out with us.

Say what you will about Chan the Coach , but Chan the man is impecable. Best of luck in all future endeavors and thanks for the memories coach.

We are fools for dumping Chan. Considering the obstacles an engineering school has when it comes to competing against the large universities, the consistency Chan gave us should be admired and not chastised. He won with the regularity not seen on the Flats in a generation. True, he couldn't beat the muts, but few anywhere have done so with regularity. To dump our coach for this one reason after we've finally shown the signs of improved recruiting (just watch the performance of these great young freshman) is absurd, delusional, and short-sighted.
When you combine this perspective with the flood of other job openings with which we are having to compete, it makes the situation even more questionable. We'll either have to hire a young guy that will use us as a stepping stone or a discard from somewhere else. Gailey has his faults, but this decision has even more of them.

Have to disagree with you, manjo...it wasn't ONE reason.

In addition to losing to Uga, we never finished ranked, never went to a BCS bowl, never won the ACC, never finished in the top 100 total offenses.

In short, not one goal was accomplished during his tenure. He got a fair shot, and performed only fairly.

We will be competing for very few of the candidates with other schools.

It was time.

Time will tell. I would probably have kept Chan for the reasons mentioned in the initial post in this thread. If this time next year we are a ranked program headed to a great bowl after a win over the Dawgs, I'll be the first to say the "fire Chan" crowd was dead on and I'm wrong.

But, my fear is that a new guy will come in, deplore the "shambles that the program is in", have two or three losing seasons, and then, when he finally wins 7 games, folks will talk about he has us "back". In that case, the "fire Chan" crowd will not have helped us at all.

As a Tech fan, I am obviously hoping the program will be successful. I am not going to pull against the next coach. But, I can only hope that DRad pulled the trigger because he knows a better coach is ready and willing to come to the flats. If he fired Chan for any other reason, such as to appease the grumblers or to head off any loss of season ticket holders unwilling to pay the "seat tax" next year, then he will have made a mistake.

I agree next year might be tough. We are losing alot of seniors. I don't think the cupboard is that well stocked...some will disagree. We have no viable quarterback but have a good running back coming back in Dwyer. We need a coach who is tough and enthusiastic. Some current players will make it some will not. I think a real telling will be if we lose some players early then we are heading the right direction. If not the new coach is being too passive.

I don't understand some people's expectations for our program. I don't think they have really changed. Here they are:

1. Top 25 every year
2. Top 25 recruiting class every year (these go hand in hand) We are seeing the results of Chan's recruiting.
3. Beat UGA 50% of the time. Sorry I don't think the is too tall a goal.
4. Make a run at the MNC every four years.
5. Graduate the majority of our players.
6. Put an exciting product on the field.

Chan could not get those done in his six years. This was the standard set by Ross and O'leary. Why should we expect less???

#4 may be a little stretch, but the rest are certainly reasonable goals.

Change number 4 to:
Acc Champ condender every 4-5 years
Run at the MNC, if only as a darkhorse, every 8-10 years

In the big view of things, we didn't even accomplish #4 in the late 90s. Sure, we were talked about 1998-2001, but never really got that close to it.

I also still think #3 is a stretch. In case you haven't noticed, UGA is ranked #4 in the BCS right now. I would be happy with a 1/3 of the time while Richt is there.
