Chip Towers: LIAR

C: Georgia officially lists only two national championships, 1942 and 1980, it was the consensus champion. But it could claim five, as Alabama and Georgia Tech do, in which recognized polls of the day named them national champions.

Does God still make people this stupid?

Well, reading those comments, most of them are pretty stupid...but the ones talking about national recognition of the Georgia 'G' are perfectly correct. Except that most of the nation would immediately recognize it as the Green Bay Packers' logo. Up north they might see it as a misdrawn Georgetown logo. Only in the south is that logo instantly associated with U[sic]GA. That's what keeps Georgia in the second tier in my opinion...it has great atmosphere, tradition, and fanbase(well...it has a horrid fanbase, but their numbers and loyalty are great), but it really doesn't have the national recognition.

...it has great atmosphere..

They have a big stadium, but the atmosphere in Athens is pretty weak compared to their peers like Auburn and Clemson. Those are vastly better places to experience atmosphere.

Yeah, that's true. Maybe I should have said a "loud" atmosphere. I mean, it is still a good atmosphere, but you're right that it doesn't compare to Clemson(never been to an Auburn game).

I always like to bust the pups balls by asking...Where were most Men in 1942? My Grandpaw was in Europe and my PawPaw was in the Pacific...HEHEHE!

It is rather hypocrtical to deny the WWII era losses to GT, but claim an NC. That's them dawgs for you.

Wow, Chip Towers is an imbecile. What is funny is you have one dumb sports writer trying to argue with one of the dumbest sports writers.

While I'm sure he was the valedictorian of his UGA class, this guy is an utter imbecile. Here's the wikipedia page on MNC winners since the 1800s.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAA_Division_I-A_national_football_championship

Georgia comes out with one championship, 1980. Even in 1942, Ohio State was the consensus National Champion and Georgia isn't listed. GT can legitimately claim 4 MNCs and Bama can claim 11.

What's even more idiotic are the comments on this blog post. These nad-lickers truly think they belong in the same sentence as the NDs, Bamas, and Michigans of college football.

Basically, UGA can look at itself as being a very high second-tier program. I quickly calculated that UGA won 65% of it's games in the 70's, 74% in the 80's, 62% in the 90's and thus far, 76% since 2000. That's 69% over the last 4 decades, very good, but not stellar enough to be considered in college football's elite. Sorry dawg nation --get over yourselves.

I grew up in Memphis and always associated that G with Grambling.
