For you FOCers out there, Coach Amato of NC State shows you how to build a college program from mediocrity. Bring in a experienced, aggressive college coaching staff. Then, go out and have a couple of above average recruiting years to go with your inherited team. Teach these guys how to hit and think aggressively. Be creative with your play-calling. Teach confidence. Teach them how to hustle, hustle, hustle....Bingo, average becomes top 10. Oh, and he beats FSU while he's at it ,too.
.
Now that wasn't so hard, was it?

But just out of curiosity, ghost, what does Amato's success so far have to do with a first year coach?

Well if you are talking about OUR first year coach, let's start with his staff. Was slow to organize, had some picked for him, while others had resume problems. A couple have experience, but most are still cutting their teeth.
.
His first recruiting class was ranked very low in the ACC and SE region. This is primary due to his unwillingness to get started after his hire. We all know he waited weeks, and when he did, he relied heavily on others to do the work.
.
His first team does not show confidence, aggressiveness, endurance, or hustle.

What did I leave out......Oh yeah, we lost to Weak Florist at home.

BDG,
It is kind of tough to take to watch ACC coaches like Friedgen, Grobe, and Amato that obviously have what it takes to coach Division 1 college football compared to our situation at TECH.
We deserved better.

Bobby Dodd's Ghost (or bones as referred to above) speaks the truth. Maybe he is a little to straight forward for some. But he is dead on the mark. All of you FOCers need to take off the gold colored glasses and wake up. We are watching a disaster in the making.

Fatjacket - Beeware

Put me in your camp ( I hate to say)...I can see whats going on - ie the direction the program is headed in...Soon, so will everyone else..

The coaches mentioned showed improvement in their first year with less talent than we have at Tech - and looking at this season we have gotten progressively worse.....

NCState is a trash-talking swaggering team because the school has a bad case of little man's disease.

They are not #1 in North Carolina in any category (except football this year only).

Granted, Amato is coaching his rear off this year.

Do you really think so ?

He's an NCSU grad - I would think FSU would be a bigger pull, but who knows ?

BDG interesting comments. However I would put a slightly different spin in some of it.. I'm not saying Amato's staff isn't good, but I don't think it's any more experienced that ours. If you check our their info you will find a range of old coaches who have been around and guys new to the game. (One only graduated in '95). There are several who came with Chuck from FSU so there was some continuity there.

He has had great success recruiting but it's not like NCSU didn't have any talent when he got there. I would be willing to bet (although I don't think either of us could prove our point) that State had as much speed and pure athletic ability on hand when he arrived as we did. Their problem has always been on the line. State's skill players have always been able to hold their own with anybody, just check their record for upsets over the last 5-6 years.

He has done a good job of building the team's confidence. But you know what, State has never lacked for confidence. They have always been a trash talking, swaggering team even when they were 3-8. I don't know if it's something about Raleigh or the guys they recruit but there has always been an attitude there. What Amato has been able to do is fill in the gaps on the team and build on that heritage. (They have always been kind of like South Carolina, with a higher opinion of themselves than thier results warranted. Can't explain it, just know it's true.)

Someone else mentioned Wake and what Grobe did was bring his staff from Ohio with him. That does give him an advantage from the start.

Here's my problem with many of the posts on Chan. We are blaming him for 1) not being a college head coach, 2) not leaving the Dolphins immediately, 3) not having a full staff in place from the get go, 4) having a "weak" recruiting class (which I disagree with, I just think it was a small one). Well guess what, we knew all this would happen before we hired him.

Some of you have genuine concerns with what you've seen this year, well I do to. But some of you have been on him since he was hired and are using your incredible powers of forseeing the obvious to decide he will never cut it. That's what I have a problem with. I would expect we will see some staff changes before next year and we'll see about recruiting in Feb.
