than he was last yr. He's actually making this a decent show, now, so listen in. Coach Chan is more relaxed, a little more talkative & sure doesn't bristle at fans like on occasion last yr. This may change if losses pile up, which they shouldn't, & the questions carry daggers.
I wish Coach Gailey would take the time to do more radio talk shows as he could add a lot to their shows & really boost his popularity. Coach did an excellent job of sharing some coaching insights of why things happened the way they did.
Particularly interesting was the reverse call that Thomas wound up fumbling. Gailey was signaling in the play, which 'he thought' Jon Smith was going to run. Smith had just run a post pattern & was taking himself out of the game, with Thomas coming in. Coach did not realize this. Thomas had not run this play in a full speed scrimmage, but had walked thru it before. Thomas ran much too deep & the handoff was forced. The coaches took Ball aside & told him if the play was getting fouled up or the timing was not there, to just tuck the ball & get what u can.
Also very interesting was how the TD pass play came about. They ran this play to the other side in the 3rd qtr. Logan runs a flag pattern to take a S with him & is the 2nd,3rd option. Logan runs the play & on the sidelines tells the coaches that he was not covered. The coaches tell Ball that if they run the play again, to watch the flag route. Logan is in again when the play is called &, ergo, Ball watches the flag route, lofts the pass & Logan gets it on a dive. Logan & Ball made the coaches look smart.
Coach G also said he looks for sacks & adds them to turnovers. If u win the turnovers + sacks stats then u probably win the game. He said the reason sacks are so important is because u lose the yds AND the down. Penalties-u only lose the yds; incompletions-u only lose the down. After TOs, sacks are the most important stat. Sacks are drive killers because of the loss of yds & down.
