I've read in the past that players truly feared Bobby Dodd.

Bear Bryant rang out fear with his players.
GOL, from what I've read was no wimp w/his players.

I've noticed this year however, that in some games on tv that players really talked back to their head coach and would turn and walk away while the coach was talking to player.

What about our new coach Paul J.? Anyone know first hand how he relates to players?

What coaches today still have the control over the players in college like in years gone by?

How do coaches today discipline players who have erred in their ways?

I know some of you have some High School coaches that were scary.

The scariest coaches I ever remember were the ones with the Dekalb Yellow Jackets. Those dudes were crazy and the YJs were mean sons of beyatches.

I'm not sure who really does it old school anymore.

I remember Curry didn't take a whole lot of guff.

From what I've read Bobby Dodd was not a "Patton" type leader, he really was able to inspire his players to excel. He had an outstanding bowl record with the philosophy of making bowl preparation fun for his players.

I think his players might have been in awe of him, but not fearful of him.

That's what I remember of Coach Dodd as well. There was a strong sense of pride in being a "TECH man" and playing for Coach Robert Lee. His players LOVED him. Truly a legendary coach and man. They didn't name the award after him for nothing.

Dodd had the player's respect. That was all he needed.

CPJ will make do with fear until he has had an opportunity to earn the respect he will soon earn.

Fear not Worry not. Gailey is gone.

I have to think Woody Hayes should be on the list.

Hayes punched an opposing player in the face, and they were afraid to punch Hayes back.

;)

Actually the players did not fear coach Dodd. He led by example, treated them with respect, and they admired him greatly. He did expect his few rules to be obeyed however, and disciplined accordingly.
I was in school when he and Bear were coaching and I hung out a little with some of the players, non starters. We would lose games we shouldn't lose, as all teams did and still do, and I said one time over a couple beers that Tech needed a mean SOB like the Bear to work them harder, toughen them up. They quickly told me that if Tech brought in some one like coach Bryant, they would be gone in a heartbeat, as they would not put up with Tech academics AND an ass like the Bear.

Its 2008 guys.
That's about as helpful as your handle.

To the original poster: from what I've heard/seen with PJ is that he's not gonna get in a player's face yelling and spitting and throwing them around by the facemask, but he's not gonna be taking any backtalk/players walking away, etc.

I'm sorry my "handle" is not as clever as yours TechinItEasy.
