i agree with bob stoops, use the current set up but, give each team the ball on the 50 yard line. in other words make defense become part of the equation. any thoughts,

I have thought about this as well whenever a game (like Sat. night--the 'cuse vs. Auburn) goes into overtime. You could do as you suggested and place the ball on the 40 or 50 yd. line and defense would enter into the equation. Since you start off possession in reasonable field goal range (under the current 25 yd. setup), only mistakes will (typically) keep a team from scoring.

Last year's SEVEN (!) OT game w/Arkansas and Olemiss was fun to watch, but drained the players. Olemiss's coach, Cutcliffe, thinks that the emotional and physical exhaustion contributed to losses after that game for his team. In watching that game, even though it was entertaining, the level of play (especially on the lines) dropped off significantly as players had trouble blocking and playing w/any kind of speed or power at all. I am surprised that there were no significant injuries at that point.

Regardless, you bring up a good point, place the ball on the 40 or 50 and let the defense enter into it.

How about this. get the special teams in on the action.

Have the ball free kicked (like after a safety, punt or place kick) from the 10 or 15 yard line. Usually the offense would get the ball out at midfield but sometimes you'd get a long return. Sometimes you'd get an illegal block in the back and be on your own 30.

But put a limit of 2 or 3 OT periods. I think it's crazy to have 5 or 6 periods.

I HATE OVERTIME.
LET IT BE A TIE!
MAKE THE GUTLESS BASTARDS GO FOR TWO AND PLAY TO WIN, NOT PLAY FOR A TIE TO GO INTO OT!

I hate OT.

As flawed as the college overtime is, the NFL overtime is even worse. Because its sudden death, a disproportionate amount of games are won by the team who wins the coin toss.

As a compromise noting all the valid points above, how about moving the ball back to the 35 instead of the 25. That would make for a 52 yard field goal if a team didn't advance the ball any and it would give most of the benefits cited about making defense more important. To move it to the 50 would just force more periods IMHO.

And 3 O/T is enough. Make'em go for 2 on the last one and if no one wins it after 3 call it a tie and deal with it.

I like OT. Every game needs a winner and a loser. Having a X-Y-1 season creates problems...

How about that Louisville OT victory against FSU a couple of weeks ago..?? That was fun to watch.

Go Jackets!

GEETEELEE has let us know what he thinks!

His point is a good one too. I can't stand it when a team has a chance to win the game by going for two and ends up kicking the PAT to put it into overtime.

Makes for excitement when a team is only down by three, drives, and kicks a FG in the last seconds of regulation. That's the reason I like the OT rule.

"The Stoop's OT" is a better way I think. We need to put in a "GEETEELEE OT RULE" if it goes into a second OT. Make the teams go for two! If it's still tied, call it a tie.

First, I hate tied, glad to have a winner.

Secondly, the idea of placing the ball on the 25 is to shorten an already long game. It is obvious, most teams can kick a field goal from there.

It you extend the yardage to the 50 yard line, there might never be a winner in some of the games. My vote is to keep it at the 25 and place pressure on each team to go all out to win. No use in holding anything back at this time.

Why does there have to me a winner? Two equal teams fight a long hard battle, maybe neither team should lose. Maybe neither team should win.

Play three periods make them go for two if at the thrid, if it is still tied it's tied.

Or just play another quarter, or 7:30 min. When it's over it's over if it is tied, then it is a tie. We might have one an overtime in 1990 but we might have lost and not won a title.
