Comments on Robert Hall from Giff Smith (link)...

I was very encouraged reading that earlier tonight. This means that Jason Peters could move inside to help with depth there. If Anthony E. , Antonio Wilson and Dieke step up we may be alright at DE.

Jason Peters is well behind Robert Hall and Ben Anderson in development.

His playing time diminished during the year...and of course he did not play at all Wed. night.

Peters has tons of potential...it would be great to have him succeed at DT. He is still young.

I remember in one of CPJ's weekly radio shows after one of our losses (may have been UVA) and he basically said (paraphrasing here) that there were players that did just enough to maintain their scholarship yet he had to start them anyway because there was no one else left to start.

My assumption at the time was that he was referring to some of the offensive lineman. That's why I like Sewak's quote about having competition in the OL positions the best in that article.

Tech returns its entire offensive line. With Uzzi and fellow freshmen Zach Fraysier, Nick McCrae, Mike Johnson and Phil Smith pushing the starters, Sewak said Tech will have “exactly what we’re looking for — some competition.”
Aside from that, it's great to read that the guys that are expected to fill the giant footprints (literally) left by Michael, Vance, and Darryl in the DL knows that they are the veterans now and need to step up and show that they can be as good if not better.

Can't wait ... now what the heck do I do until September?! :D

Hall is listed as 250 lbs. Does he have the potential to get to 265 - 280?

Sounds like Hall and Barnes may be a big part of re-stocking the DL.

Hall will probably play at 260 next year.

Giff says he's the meanest defensive lineman. I like mean in a defensive lineman.

Plug Robert in opposite Morgan. Put Barnes at one tackle. Put a little more weight on super strong Ben Anderson and tell him to play low. Pencil him in at the other tackle. Doesn't sound bad for a starting four.

Depth is another issue. I don't think the other huge tackle (one from Emanual County. Name escapes me) is likely to make the jump from very small high school ball to contributing in one year, but who know? Lot of time between now and next season. Peters and Walls play some. We might well be okay at D-line next year after all.

JC Lanier, Logan Walls, and Jason Peters will have to play HUGE minutes next year if we are going to be good on D.

Is Antonio Wilson the DE that PJ. is talking about ? That was unblockable in practice.

I know he has said TJ Barnes has been unblockable...but I do not doubt he may have said that about Antonio Wilson. PJ said just a couple weeks ago that they were extremely impressed with Antonio Wilson and expect him to be a great DE for us. They are high on him.

Hall and Morgan will be very good at DE. Egbuniwe and Peters will be a drop-off, but both have potential to be good. I still think that Peters may see time at DT, especially if Wilson progresses as supposed. Dieke and Crenshaw will provide good depth there.

Anderson and Walls will really need to step up at DT. TJ Barnes will get plenty of PT, and we'll need a 4th. Again, I wouldn't be surprised to see Peters try to play there. I seriously doubt Lanier will be ready w/o a year of S&C.

I agree...but he may have to. I even think he would be a better OG.

Maybe so, however, it seems he's a bit too tall for the blocking style they like from our interior OL. It's hard for the big, tall guys to get low quickly enough to cut. If he can do it, though, he'd be a huge asset up front.

He is only listed at 6-3....and I do not think he is that tall...more like 6-2.

Even at 6-3, he is shorter than Will Jackson, Jay Finch, and Antonio Foster...all listed at 6-4.

It is a moot point though as he is coming in at DT.

I thought he was like 6'7". Yikes, he's 6'3" and in the neighborhood of 340?

whoever plays the DL the LB corps has GOT to play better, but the combo may be really too young/challenged to make a good defense

well...next year the LB corps could actually be ahead of the DL...and the DB group become the stronget of all. That is how it goes in college football where players rotate in and out.

Also keep in mind most of our defense this year was base alignment stuff. Wommack will add in new wrinkles to free things up for certain players with added experience...and with consistency.

Injuries rocked our LB's this year. Jefferson missed 5 critical experience building games early....Barnes missed lots of time....Griffin was banged up and missed some time...Bowen missed the beginning and the end of the season...
Sylvester had to play as a true freshman and we would have liked to redshirt him...it was a lot to learn for a young and thin corps this year.
