Comparing CG to the rest of the ACC:

A previous thread gave me this idea....

Guys,
If you could rank the coaches in the ACC top to bottom based on who you'd prefer to have at Tech, what would your list look like? You can tell how bored I am, coming up with this kind of topic. Here's my stab at it:

1) Fridge - Pure offensive genius and does a great job at pushing his talent to the limit. The man won a championship with a group that probably was 5th or 6th best in the conference. Unreal.

2) CG - Hey, I'm a Techie. What do you expect? CG has proven he can coach at all levels. Now, it's time for him to take us to the next level. If he can shore up our D and recruit well in GA, he'll have that chance.

3) Papa Bowden - He'd be at the top, except that he's so old. Plus, I often wonder what kind of coach he'd be without the obvious talent advantage he gets from recruiting Florida into an easy school like FSU.

4) Jim Grobe - I like this guy. He did something that's very hard to do. He had a winning season at Wake Forest, something his predecessor did only once in 8 years.

5) Bunting - Tough, hard-nosed coach. I like him and fear what kind of team he can put together if he can harness all the talent available in his state. I wonder how easy he is to get along with. He's a hot-head for sure and that might be good or bad...

6) Al Groh - Had an awesome recruiting year this year. I think he'll be putting together quite a team in the future. They had started to slide under Grumpy and I think Al will reverse that trend.

7) Tommy Bowden - I don't like him. Pure and simple. He's clueless about defense and he runs his mouth too much. I have a feeling that he's not gonna get the job done at Clemson. Last year, they were a 1-man team and we would have pounded them if anyone but GOL had been on the sideline.

8) Amato - No comment.

9) Franks - Well, what can you say? He's at Duke. He'd probably do better anywhere else.

Comments? Critique?

BTW, I'd probably put Mark Richt somewhere between Bunting and Groh. He's good, but he has brain cramps in critical situations.

Hey Bugboy, the only change I'd make is to flip #1 and #2. I got my gold-colored glasses on, and besides, if one looks back he will turn into a pillar of salt. I must admit, GT got rid of the wrong fat man at the end of the 2000 season.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">FHstinger, seen you post this a couple times. Which 2 fat men are you talking about? Friedgen and O'leary? We just finished a 9-3 season when most people thought we would be horrible. Why would we have fired O'leary? Maybe we promoted the wrong guy when Ross left, but nobobdy was calling Friedgen an offensive genius back then.

Look at Maryland with the Fridge after the 2001 season, and then look at GT with O'Leary minus Fridge after the 2001 season. The successful 2000 season for Tech was mostly the work of Fridge, not O'Leary IMHO. I rest my case.

JimBob,

I think FH is just saying that O'Leary's success was mostly due to Fridge (not trying to put words in his mouth). He's not the only one who feels that way. And no, I for one didn't ever want to see O'Leary fired or demoted. However, I got sick of his act in 2001 and think the program will be better with C-Bee G-Bee as HC.

I think we all need to salute GOL for his hard work over a 7 year period to put GT back on the football map. He recruited well and established a sound, disciplined program that competed with and beat all of our rivals (except FSU). At the same time, GOL had topped out. He was never gonna be better than a 9-3 coach, and most likely the program was about to slip a little. Keep in mind, that from 1995 through 2001, GOL was exactly 1 game over .500 without Fridge on the sideline. With Fridge, he was 21 games over .500. That is a powerful statistic, IMO.

It's not a slap at GOL. He was a good coach. But he aint no Fridge.

Just MHO.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">I agree with the sentiment...like I said, it looks like we promoted the wrong guy back when Ross left. But its in complete hindsight...I think back in 2000, after a 9-3 season, I don't many people would have said Fridge over GOL so vocally like they do now.

Basically, I was wondering if he felt back in December 2000, that we let go the wrong person, before the mess this year. Thats all.

Since you asked the question about top to bottom who we would like to see at Tech, I would offer the following opinion(s). [Had you asked who I think the best coach is, I might answer slightly differently - best coach does not necessarily equal best coach for Tech, IMO.]

1. Gailey. I'm a Tech man. 'Nuff said.

2. Friedgen. Well liked in Atlanta. Knows what coaching at the Institute is all about. I like his style, and his passion for tradition. I think he will be a success no matter where he goes (or doesn't go).

3. Bunting. I love the attitude he brought to Chapel Hill, and think he would be an asset to a program like Tech. He bleeds sky blue, so that would be a problem, but he seems to be a class act with the right focus on student athletes.

4. Groh. If he can coach like he recruited this year, we could be in trouble, but the conference will be better off in a couple of years. Again, I think he would be an asset at Tech, in spite of his snob heritage.

5. Grobe. I love what he did last year, and think he could do even better with better athletes (which I think Tech generally has).

6. Franks. Don't know much about him, but he is ahead of the other 3 simply because I don't know of any affiliation with the Bowden clan.

7. Amato. As close to being a Bowden as you can be without the DNA. Don't like the squeeky voice, don't like the attitude, don't like the fact that he trained under Papa Bowden.

8. Tommy Bowden. He can't help his ancestry, and I can't help but dislike him. He should have stayed at Tulane, or joined his brother in the booth.

9. Bobby Bowden. Plays the high and mighty card Sunday through Friday, and plays as dirty as possible on Saturday, dadgummit. I don't like him or his style, and I haven't liked him for a long time - long before F$U joined the conference. I am glad we don't have to put up with him or any of his family on the Flats.

GO JACKETS!!

Aiken,
You answered the question as I intended...who would you want at Tech...BTW, your assessment of Daddy Bowden is a good one. I probably should have put him way below where I did.
At least, you and I agree on Amato and TB.
