He passed the 1,000 yard mark for the year with his effort last Saturday. He becomes the 10th back in Tech history to gain more than 1,000 yards in one season.

Interestingly enough, no Tech back ever gained 1,000 yards in a season prior to increasing the season to 11 games.

Does that mean he's the first one to do it in 10 games?

If so, way to go, JD!

No, I am sure ELI and Lavette did it in 10 games. Maybe TC and Mays as well. I was just surprised when I looked it and saw that our first 1,000 season was actually Robert Lavette in 1982. It seems like some of the other great ones like Hardeman, Teas, or Snow would have made it to that threshold earlier. Of course, I'm not sure they kept stats as accurately in the more distant past then but maybe Clint Castleberry did it and they didn't have the record keeping to prove it.

Tashard did it after playing in only 9 games last year (it was the tenth game of the season), and 11 games the year before.

PJ did it in 10 back in 2003, as well.

Congrats JD!

ELI did it in 1978. Did I miss something? Or... Maybe I'm just having a bad day. :p

He could be Heisman if he had a line that knew how to block.

Perhaps CPJ should consider a new OL coach? While you're at it Special Teams?

It's crazy to me that we've got one of the best RBs in the nation and we just can't get it done.

Maybe we have him a couple more years? I hope?

1970 = 11th game

We were 4-6 in '69 and the extra game was added the following year. We went 8-3 (ND, Aub, & UT) in the regular season and beat Texas Tech in the 1970 Sun Bowl for the 12th game that year. That was a looooooong season, and we didn't start fall practice til the 3rd week of August with the first game the 3rd week of September.

That Sun Bowl was played on the 3rd Saturday in December that year, some students were still taking finals, and it was a very, very, long year. And today's "season" is a month longer.

I believed the season went to 11 games for the 1968 season.

I was at that UGA game in Athens as a teenager. BIG WIN! Rob Healy, Steve Harkey, I think Smylie and give me a day or two and I'll tell you who the QB was. I normally could but I'm having a Senior Moment. <ssshhhh> What was his name!!? It wasn't Jack Williams was it? He was a backup pressed into action and did a heck of a job. Great all-time TECH win.

Patience grasshopper. Enjoy the ride.

Hey deepsnap, just wanted you to know that this 14 year old kid almost died the day that ND lucked out to be the Jackets in S Bend in 1970. That pass that (was it Theisman?) threw to the ND WR who caught it lying on his back for the critical first down was pure luck. Then you guys went up and beat the mutts and followed that up with a whuppin' of TT in the Sun Bowl. 9-3 was an awesome season after three straight 4-6 seasons.

But nothing compares to that 6-0 win over UGAG the year before at (then) Grant Field. Bubba Hoats' interception sealed their doom and this 13 year old who was sick with the flu that day prayed that God would let us break the "streak."

Did you know you guys had such an effect over the kids of that era?

Jack Williams was the QB that day.....

...just one of Carson's hunches, he went with Jack instead of Eddie McAshan that day and the late Mike Wysong made Jack look good.

ADDED: Jack was more than just a backup. He & Eddie had split the starter role all season and Budro made a game day decision to go with the senior on the road in front of a hostile bunch of Gaggers. Eddie, then a SOPH, was extremely talented, but he was like the little girl with the curl: when he was good, he was very, very good, but when he was bad he was in Reggie Ball's league. Jack wasn't going to necessarily put the team on his shoulders, but he wasn't going to get you beat, either. All he did was lead & win.

That was one of the few times we've beaten Ugag between the damned weeds, and certainly one of the very few times we beat Dooley there.

You have an idea, but little or no perspective....

To this day, I wish I had said "Yes" to the little black kid from the Techwood Projects & O'Keefe who asked me to be his Big Brother. He was always at practice, always around, and all I really qualified for in my early 20's was to be a Big Stooopid. I hope that kid made it.

It wasn't a WR Theisman hit, but his RB Ed Gulyas, 45 yards down the field & Gulyas was flat on his back. The crowd goes nuts, ND doesn't have to punt, they scored and that was the game.

To get back to your original question, I guess we knew. After all, every player starts out as fan long before it becomes a job, or a means to an end, i.e., a degree from NATS. I wish I had been a better person then, but that's what growing up is about.

Thanks for asking and, as always, thanks for remembering....
