I've heard rumors on other boards that a team must finish in the top 12 in the BCS standings and have less than 5 losses. Does anyone know for sure?

I doubt it, although the ACC doesn't deserve to get one IMHO. FSU is 8-5...8-5! Come on, everybody knows they are not BCS material. Maryland had their chance to get back into the mix but got pasted by UVA. Remember a few years back though, Syracuse went to the Orange Bowl at 8-4, so FSU is almost guaranteed to go...probably to the Sugar.

Those rumors are incorrect. There are no minimum requirements to get the automatic BCS bid. Perhaps there are some for the at-large bids. In the first year of the BCS, Wisconsin got the Big-10 bid. They were ranked #24 in the nation.

The BCS eligible conference champion goes to the BCS, period. Doesn't matter how many wins or losses. It's up to the conference to determine its champion.

Now, there is the "Big East" rule, whereby if a conference's champion does not maintain at least a 12 ranking in the BCS standings over a 4 year period, then the BCS has the right to examine the conference's automatic into the BCS.

Note that it is the conference champion's ranking - not the team that won the confernce that year, but each years champions position in the BCS rankings.

The ACC does not have to wory for this year or the next - F$U was BCS ranked around #2 or #3 2 and 3 years ago. I think Maryland was around #9 last year. Obviously F$U will be ranked out of the top 10. A couple of more years like this (where the ACC champion is not ranked in the top 10 BCS), and there could be trouble. But historically, conference's rise and fall a bit.

JJ--FSU is not 8-5. They're 8-4, and they will WAX florida to go 9-4. Florida is an sec team. If we've learned anything this season it's that the sec can't beat anybody non-con wise. So FSU will end up 9-4 and ranked.

BTW--There have been many 3 and one 4 loss teams that I can think of that have played in BCS bowls recently. SYR--IOWA--PURD--STANF just to name a few
