This may have been mentioned deep in another thread...

Anybody pay attention to the DL rotation yesterday? Looked like Jabari was on the 2nd string. First team was Freeman, Gotsis, Gamble, and Chungong.

For all the hype Jabari has received, he hasn't made much of an impact yet.

It looked like the coaches let the entire 1st and 2nd strings rotate series yesterday. I think I saw Jabari with the 1st string once in the 2nd qtr

Jabari hasnt made an impact on the field yet. I'm just glad he's out there playing in his final year. He worked hard and earned the opportunity. The impact DL I've seen so far are Gotsis and Freeman. Those two kids are living in the backfield. ND's OL is elite, though, so this will be a great test.

Agree, Gotsis is on his way to having a great senior year. Hopefully he can continue his performance against better OL

I wouldn't be too concerned about any individual performances on the DL. The fact that we have a full line rotation with no real dropoff will be good for us in the long run

That is hard to say. I would be curious what the coaches rate him based on what our scheme had him doing. If his assignment is to hold down gaps you may not see him in the backfield much.

I think we are rotating a 1A-1B unit. I've liked what I've seen. Freeman is a monster.

Anyone saying JHD is not having an impact is completely ignorant about football defensive play. His job is NOT TO MAKE A LOT OF TACKLES! He first priority is to plug the middle, not give ground, and allow linebackers and DE's to make plays. Watch the first two games again. He is having a big impact and doing is job.

Also Hunt was playing plenty in the first string. I think in the defense when we get super ahead, we don't completely pull every starter and empty the bench all at once but just partially put in the younger players or start substituting like crazy. Freeman, Golden and White were also still playing at times late in the game.

Also given the fact that this is Hunt's 2nd game on the defensive line, even as a starter it may make sense to leave him in longer than any of the others.

I didn't mean he isn't making an impact at all. He was double teamed a lot last week. I just meant i haven't seen him in the backfield much yet, at least as much as Gotsis.

Let me put a disclaimer out that I'm not trying to single him out or be negative, just making an observation since people hyped him up a lot (myself included).

I've been impressed with the D so far, including the line as a whole

Agreed, it's so nice to have some real depth for a change. The D took care of things yesterday, and will reign holy fire upon those drunken Irish next Saturday.

If he was such a force, why did he not start?

The DL is not getting it done on pass rushes. PJ himself said the pass rush sucks so far with just the 4 guys.

Of course this is probably an improvement over last season when our pass rush sucked even with blitzers.

Gotsis is dominating the front at times. He is in the backfield a lot.I thought JHD would be something akin to that but so far ,not much.
otoh-it is a lot to ask a player just playing the position for 1st time to be a force

I have thought just the opposite. Looks like we get real good push and pressure the QB

We are getting pressure on the QB, but having to make bring an extra man or two. CPJ said that only bringing four just wasn't getting the job done.

I suspect he's playing that up a bit (cpj on the ineffective pass rush). We haven't really needed much pass rush in the first two so they're slow playing it and will be more aggressive as the competition steps up

I also got the impression that he was being a little disingenuous
