I wonder why O'Leary played him then. Especially considering that two years difference between your QBs seams ideal, and is indeed what we have had since Hamilton. If Biblo had not gotton hurt (I forgot about that) he would only be a year behind Suggs now. I guess we can feel fortunate that Bilbo still has his fours years of eligibility, but I think O'Leary might have made a mistake playing him when he really was not needed last year. I think it should've been obvious to O'Leary that it would be far better to have Bilbo able to play 2 years after Suggs rather than just 1. Again I wonder why he played him if even just one play disqualifies him from receiving a redshirt.

O'leary played Bilbo for basically the same reason that Buck played him. He is too big a talent to stand beside the coach on the sideline. But he is young and he can't get better without playing.
Also, last year Godsey was playing on one leg and if Bilbo had not gotten hurt he would have played more as the season progressed.
And anyone that plays football can get dinged up (just a little) later on to still qualify for a medical redshirt as long as they haven't played more than 3 games.

Back to the issue of redshirting Jordan

I think this could be a HUGE mistake..
I am assuming that Manget will be out 2-4 weeks (mainly because the groin is critical to kicking, so its very different from a DL player having a groin, for instance...

Just seeing on Sunday the Panthers give up a chance for OT (vs the Pack) by missing a 24 yd FG with a "new" kicker, makes me nervous....Is losing a game worth it, to make sure Jordan gets a redshirt ???? Plus, frankly, I'd MUCH rather see him get some experience this year anyway - that way we don't start next year with a "rookie" kicker....I'd like to see him cut his teeth on PATs, and FG's in a non-critical situation, like hopefully in the next 2-3 games......

I find it hard to believe we'd use less than the best players in each game, regardless of the circumstances......

I don't think losing a game is worth saving a redshirt...especially on a 4-1 team with the potential of this team. No one knows what will happen 3 or 4 years from now anyway.
What I read that Chan said is that he wouldn't blow Jordan's redshirt unless our other kickers are out indefinitely. So I assume as long as Burnette can play then we will still try to save Jordan. If both Burnette and Manget are definitely out, Jordan would probably have to kick unless a walk-on or one of the punters could show that they could do the job this week in practice. I don't see how we could give up the ability to kick field goals just in order to save a redshirt. I don't believe we will do that.

Using a punter or a walk-on....Man thats scarey to me, compared with Jordan (at least from what we've all heard)....

Why not go ahead and give him some experience NOW - I mean, 5 years from now is a LONG way off IMO......This year, as you said, we're 4-1 and who knows what we can do this year ? I think as a rule (and I believe this is the way GOL tended to think FWIW), you put the best players available on the field at each game. Period. To me, this is no different than not playing ACE this year because we want to redshirt him

As mentioned, after Sundays games, we can't take ANY FG for granted....

GR,
I agree with you...we need to play to win..period.
Saving Jordan's redshirt will be fine if we can get away with it...but if not then we should play him.
One thing about walk-on kickers....many of them are very good. Not that many kickers get scholarships, so being a walk-on kicker does not mean you are not good.

Good point re: the walk-ons...I agree with that.

However, if Jordan is even slightly better than the other kickers (probably much better, but for the sake of argument), I say go with him anyway !

Can you imagine losing a game by missing a short FG because we want to make sure we have a good kicker in 5 years down the road ?

This season has been if anything an opportunity to learn about some of the particulars regarding redshirting. So here we go again.

Last year I know Bilbo had some limited playing time in the Navy game, and yet was subsequently redshirted (non-medical). So can we assume that Jordon can likewise have some limited playing time and still retain his redshirt status.

Now we have learned about the "fourth-game" rule regarding a medical redshirt, but does this apply to regular redshirt as well? Navy was the third game.

jescho,
Bilbo's redshirt was a medical redshirt. I believe he had surgery on his hand.
If you play in any game you cannot redshirt...only medical redshirt. If you play in more than 3 games then you cannot medical redshirt...only a special medical hardship that is rarely granted.
Hope this helps.
