Defensive Lineman?

Some things never change. GOL started the trend of not bringing in defensive lineman, we continue to bemoan our lack of size or strength year after year, and we continue the trend into the Gailey era. We can sign all the receivers and backs we want, but eventually, the game is won or lost upfront. For some reason, we seem to have a stigma about recruiting big, defensive lineman, but Clemson, Auburn, Georgia, Alabama, etc. double or triple the signees over us at that position every year. I've not commented on quality, sure you may have to go to your B list, or in our case the C list, but good grief how long does it take to get the message we need some large defensive lineman in order to beat FSU, Maryland and Ga or anybody else ?

Yes, I remember very well GO'L constantly remarking, "Of course we could have gotten all the big lineman in Georgia last year. I just didn't want them.It might start a trend. And I hope this will be my legacy at Tech: 'No Big Linemen.' Whoever follows me, especially if it's some clueless former NFL head coach, I hope he'll maintain this carefully nurtured trend."

In the distant past, we did a pretty good job of bringing in junior college lineman transfers. Rock Perdoni comes to mind.

From a timing standpoint, I wonder if it's too late to use some of the ships still on the shelf.

WASP,
I'm not sure if your concerned mostly about the size of the DL or the number we recruited; it sounds like both.

By comparison, the average size of the F$u DL on this past seasons roster was 256. The average of the DL we signed this year is 276. Speed and agility are the two most important factors on the DL. It's not just a push-push battle up front. The ability to get to the gap quickly and close it up is key to DL.

If I have time, at least for curiosity's sake, I'll compare the teams' you mentioned DL signees.

To continue the comparison with F$u:
On this past years roster (DL) fsu-13, GT-12
average weight fsu-256, GT-271

signees this year (DL) fsu-4, GT-4
average weight fsu-267, GT-276

fsu is not our standard, but since you feel we are behind them in numbers and size then that is where the comparison falls.

Good insight, what about DT position alone without the ends? How did we compare to FSU?

Of course, they wern't exactly a defensive powerhouse this past season either.

"we maybe small but we're slow"

71,
I had originally averaged it without and with the ends, but is was only a few pounds different (250 without the ends) that I used the total average. You would think that without the end the average would have been higher, but it wasn't.
Tech's avg. without the ends is 275(last year's roster only)

here's ugag's numbers and averages

past roster 17 260lbs
signees 1 270lbs
without the ends 287lbs

awbern DL:
last season 13-264lbs; 7-283lbs w/o ends

signees 8-247lbs (two jucos)

Interesting signee for awbern--Montavian Collier LB played football for the first time as a hs senior 74 tackles-5 for loss; 4 int-7 broken up-ine int for td

clempsum DL:
last season 16-256 lbs; 277lbs w/o ends
signees 1-220

last one here--alerbummer:

last season 20-267lbs w/o ends 9-294lbs

signees 1-295lbs

ok one more from MNCADBBCS (mythical national champs as determined by bown championship series)

last season 15-262lbs; w/o ends 6-281lbs

signees 4-265lbs; w/o ends 3-275lbs

FWIW

We actually do seem to have some good size on the roster but it seemed to me that the guys who got all the playing time were smaller. Is that true or me just not paying attention? Along with size we need to improve strength. That's the big thing about FSU historically, smaller but fast and very strong.
