Can someone explain it to me? I thought it meant you would get the ball then, but it seems to mean something else...

Why would you WANT to kick at the start of the second? So basically, in effect, it means what I thought.

I always interpreted differ as meaning you want to kick off in the first half and receive in the second half.

I've heard that it's to put pressure on the other team's offense to perform. Something like being the first kid up in a spelling bee, I guess.

Deferring to the second half means you give the other team the choice to choose if they want to kick or want to recieve in the first half and you will be able to at beginning of second half.

Exactly. Here's the rule:

At the start of a game, there is a coin toss. The team that wins the coin toss says whether it wants first choice of the options at the start of the game or the start of the second half. The other team gets the first choice of the options at the start of the other half. At the start of each half, the team with first choice of options can decide to either received the ball on a kickoff, kick the ball or pick which goal they want to defend (that is, which side of the field they want) for the next quarter. Almost everyone elects to receive the ball on a kickoff. Then the other team selects which goal they want to defend.

So deferring says, "We're going to pick in the second half. You get to pick now." And what you're picking between is kicking off, receiving, and which end of the field you want to defend.

So if you defer, you make that choice in the second half (which will always be to receive, duh), and your opponent has to decide at the beginning of the game, so they're obviously going to choose receive (as opposed to picking a side of the field) or you would get the ball to start both halves...

Yea, I have coached in a game before that we deferred the opening coin toss and the team must of had a dumbass talking because they choose to kick and we ended up receiving both halves.

There are some conditions - heavy winds, for one - when you might want to choose direction of field instead of possession; or if you have a great defense, you think you'll get better field position kicking, holding, and returning a punt then returning a kick.
