Delayed Blitz

BC would blitz players right at the snap and disrupt plays. The few times we would blitz, our linebackers would hesitate in the gap for a few seconds in no-man's land. They weren't providing pass coverage or rushing the QB during this time.

This allowed their QB time to scan the field with no pressure. Why don't we blitz at the snap like everyone else?

I think we did a little of both.

1. You don't want to commit to the blitz too early. You want to disguise the blitz so the pressure is a surprise.

2. The delayed blitz can be pretty effective on longer down situations. Get the OL to commit to their blocks and a Lb can have a free path to the QB.

I'm not sure how much of it was 1 vs 2, but that would be a good call in show question.

Former GT LB, ibeeballin broke down some of the defensive series on TOS and it was pretty eye-opening in terms of illustrating why our defense (including our blitzes) were ineffective. Check it out if you can.

On BC's first set of downs, for example, Mitchell had a delayed blitz which should have netted him a free run to the QB. Mitchell inexplicably took an inside angle leaving the clear outside lane unoccupied through which he could have gone unblocked.

All in all, we have personnel/talent issues but we have even more bad-step/execution problems. Seems the scheme is sorta sound but we have a lot of mistakes happening.

Now understand, this is in addition to the talent deficit on DL we have.

Agree with the gist of this. FWIW, Mitchell is only a true sophmore so I can understand him taking a bad angle. Hopefully these are the kinds of things we are can clean up as we get closer to the end of the month. We'll be facing some quality offenses in Clemson, Miami, and Pitt. Can't afford these kinds of minor mistakes.

Yeah, I didn't intend to single him out. Just providing an example of a situation that arose that pretty much matched what the OP was asking about.

I understand, and didn't take it as such.

I think we still have a relatively young defense, yet still played well vs BC. Can't wait to see what we look like in 2017.

Thanks. I'll check it out.

We blitzed at the snap off the edge right around the beginning of the 2nd half.

They took it like 70 yards to the house.

So yeah, be careful what you wish for.

One of their OL also tackled one of our DL so should have been a hold. Understand your point though. They got lucky with run call vs outside blitz.

The safety and one of the line backers was way out of position on that play. That's how it looked to me anyway.
