Bolt is horrible at the first 40. Anyone who has watched him knows that. If there was a 40 yard dash competition in the Olympics, Bolt wouldn't even medal. Check the 100 meter finals at the Olympics. Bolt was in 5th or 6th place at 40 meters.

That's why it's almost more impressive at how much he can turn it on down the stretch.

Bolt is probably around 4.3 in the 40 so it is possible a few guys might be able to beat him. Chris Johnson, Deion Sanders in his prime, Jacoby Ford, Trindon Holliday... even Champ Bailey ran it in 4.28 at the combine.

And if guys had chosen to run track instead of play football, Bolt might not have a gold medal...

I think if you look at bolts splits they come out to 4.11-4.2 in the first 40. That's with blocks, but still really fast through the first 40. These guys would have a heck of a time beating him.

Bolt is just a big guy. It takes time to get bigger things moving, and I would be there's several guys playing college football right now who could take him in the first 40 yards.

A track 40m is also measured differently than a football 40, starter vs starting the clock yourself. Robinson is probably more nimble than Bolt and who knows, maybe he accelerates faster, both of which are great for football, but there is no way he is faster than Bolt.

well for one, football guys run a 40 yard dash. That is roughly equal to 36.58 meters.

second, guys running 40's in football camp obviously aren't subject to reaction time, which is usually around .15 seconds.

however, I don't think they run off of blocks so that helps the Olympic sprinters a little and might negate the reaction time lost.

Denard even said at 60m and beyond he'd be in trouble.

I think he might have a chance at 40, just because Usain is a bit of a slow starter.

I'll take a stab at this.

That is Bolt's splits for several of his races, 2008 Olympics, his world record in 2009 and London 2012. I'll use his slowest time of those which was 2008. He ran the first 40 meters in 4.65seconds. 40 meters is 3.7 yards longer than 40 yards. So we just need to calculate the time it would take him to run 3.7 yards and subtract it from that time to get his 40.

He ran the 30-40 meters in 0.87 seconds or 11.49 meters per second or 12.57 yards/second. 3.7 yards at 12.57 yards/second is 0.294 seconds. So he ran the first 40 yards in 2008 in a time of 4.65-0.294=4.356 seconds.

Denards fastest 40 time according to wiki is 4.32. So as others have pointed out, Bolt had reaction time against him but also got to use blocks. Assuming those cancel out, one of Bolt's slowest races, was just barely slower than Denards fastest race. Based on that it is possible Denard could beat Bolt, but seems unlikely.

I guess comparing yourself to Bolt is one way to get everyone to look at you.

I also think surface has a lot to do with it. Those Olympic tracks are FAST. Even compared to your average high school/college track they are significantly faster. If Robinson's running on grass or turf, that's another variable in play.

I'm lol over here at all these comments about beating Bolt in the 40. Yeah, Bolt has a slow start but it is slow compared to other world class sprinters. Bolt eat up a lot of ground and eat it up fast. If my math is correct based on how many steps it took Bolt to win the 100m. It would take Bolt about 14-15 steps to run the 40. To put that in perspective, Calvin Johnson runs his 40 in 18 steps

We know this is false because Denard plays in the Big 10.
Exactly.

However, it goes without saying that SEC speed is much greater than Bolt speed. Aaron Murray would make Bolt look slow. SEC speed is so fast it's illegal in 39 states.
