Denard Robinson > Usain Bolt?

I'll take a stab at this.

That is Bolt's splits for several of his races, 2008 Olympics, his world record in 2009 and London 2012. I'll use his slowest time of those which was 2008. He ran the first 40 meters in 4.65seconds. 40 meters is 3.7 yards longer than 40 yards. So we just need to calculate the time it would take him to run 3.7 yards and subtract it from that time to get his 40.

He ran the 30-40 meters in 0.87 seconds or 11.49 meters per second or 12.57 yards/second. 3.7 yards at 12.57 yards/second is 0.294 seconds. So he ran the first 40 yards in 2008 in a time of 4.65-0.294=4.356 seconds.

Denards fastest 40 time according to wiki is 4.32. So as others have pointed out, Bolt had reaction time against him but also got to use blocks. Assuming those cancel out, one of Bolt's slowest races, was just barely slower than Denards fastest race. Based on that it is possible Denard could beat Bolt, but seems unlikely.

Excellent post. Now we need to blow something up, Mythbusters style.

Exactly.

However, it goes without saying that SEC speed is much greater than Bolt speed. Aaron Murray would make Bolt look slow. SEC speed is so fast it's illegal in 39 states.

more like DUIs are enforced in 39 states

Well, this seals it for me...

"Denard could do that in a heartbeat – he's the fastest man in the world," backup quarterback Devin Gardner said. "I know what Usain Bolt did in the Olympics, and Denard probably couldn't beat him at 100 meters, but when it comes to football speed at 40 yards, I'd take Denard. He's that fast."

Read a pretty good article about Bolt, and the widespread belief that he is "slow" to start and finishes fast.

The change that allowed world-class Jamaican sprinters to actually stay in Jamaica came about, in large part, thanks to 72-year-old Dennis Johnson, the philosopher king of Jamaican sprinting.
He asks, Yoda-like: Have you ever seen Usain Bolt come from the back and rush past the rest of the field? Yes? Well that's not really what you're seeing.

"What you saw was the other people tiring first," Johnson says. "Because you cannot increase speed after 6 seconds or 60 meters. It's a physiological impossibility."

The illusion of the champion sprinter accelerating past the field is really his consistency and their deceleration.

Bolt is horrible at the first 40. Anyone who has watched him knows that. If there was a 40 yard dash competition in the Olympics, Bolt wouldn't even medal. Check the 100 meter finals at the Olympics. Bolt was in 5th or 6th place at 40 meters.

Bolt ran a 4.19 forty yard dash. Come again?

I'd like to see Usain Bolt smoke these posers in a Pros vs Joes style 40yd dash, 100m and 200m competition.

Its true - if the race had stopped at 40 yards/meters, Bolt would not have placed. I think it has something to do with his stride being a bit longer than the other guys due to his height - the anncr tried to explain why this would make him slower at first but then allow him to overtake the others. Apparently, Bolt takes two fewer steps than the rest of the field during the 100m.

Not sure if that completely answers the question but interesting nonetheless.

Bolt might suck at 40 meters because he's never given a ---- about being good over 40 meters, he hasn't needed to

I'm not arguing with anyone who thinks 40 yards is the same as 40 meters.

Bolt was clocked in a 4.19 forty yard dash unofficial during his world record pace of 9.58 a few years ago. While a 100 meter champion and Olympic qualifier may legitimately beat Bolt in the 40, no kid in college would.
