Both had tough situations they needed to over come. One embraced the challenge even thoug he almost quit after this first year. Ross also listened to the fans no matter how painful it was in the beginning while Collins waves them off. That’s the difference and that’s why Tech has to cut the cord.

“Once a week, on Friday mornings before each home game, Ross holds another breakfast. It is "Breakfast with Bobby," a 7 a.m. buffet open to alumni and fans. For an hour, Ross takes questions and talks football. An average of 100 people attend those breakfasts, which Ross initiated because he felt fans would be less likely to criticize if they knew exactly what was going on. He does a 6 a.m. radio call-in show every day for the same reason.”

Smartass comments out of the way, I appreciate the perspective. It would be nice to have a coach who, like Ross, understood that part of his commitment involves the perceptions and happiness of the people for whom these games are played. And who is dedicated enough to winning that they're willing to open a dialog with those people even if it's not exactly something they want to do.

I was at every one of those breakfasts. Didn't miss even one.

But refer to 33's post. Ross was a football coach. Collins is an idiot.

I also remember going to the press box once a week for those lunches with George O'Leary. I've got a hand written letter he wrote me. Bill Curry sent me real Tech football helmets to give to my sons one Christmas. Bobby Ross wrote inviting my son and me to come into the locker room after that South Carolina game he won 34-0. Bobby Cremins invited my son and me to a preseason practice and to his house. Why did they do these things? Not because I was anybody special, because I never have been. Just because they cared about people who cared about Tech. And, they weren't afraid to answer questions, because they knew what they were doing. They were secure men. They were good people.

Ross was a PROVEN head coach when we hired him.
People really should stop expecting that the right way to find the coach will guide us to the promised land is to catch up with him on his way there and kill the people who were already following him. They should also stop pretending the proof was always in the pudding when a coach fails, just so they can pretend they knew better the whole time.

There is no one true path to becoming a good head coach, nor is there a foolproof method for finding them.

The main difference is that there hasen't been a win or strech of games that you could build off of in 89' The maryland game was where people could feel the turn and we started getting some wins going and didn't look back. The Unc game this year could have been that game but, I was saying that he would need to win that pitt game to really convince me and have me going along.

I didn't come here to listen to some enlightened dalai lama jib jab.... we want heads on a pike!

I too remember O'Leary's Friday meeting with whoever wanted to show up. They'd order some Chick Fil A - sometimes it would only be a couple dozen folks. He was easy to talk to and a great guy. He would talk to kids, women whoever and I always got the feeling he felt a responsibility and privilege to interact with the folks. Class.

No comparison. I'm really starting to detest Collin's act about how much he cares about the team to the exclusion of all else. The man is making mealy-mouthed excuses and hiding behind this bs display of empathy. As has been said he's not behaving much like a man at all. I'd a whole lot rather see him stand up before the cameras and break out in genuine tears than listen to any more of his horsecrap about how he only cares about the team.. What kind of example does that set? Don't accept accountability? Just keep trying to con people with how much you care? Pathetic.
