Disappointment and Hope

My biggest disappointment with the offense in year 1 has been our inability to make more great plays on option runs and pitches at the corner. Our biggest plays have been when JD breaks a long run on the first option or a called handoff or pitch or when Josh breaks out for a gain. But, the number of times we have run a beautiful option on the outside containment defender with a late pitch or QB keep have been too few. I can think of a few times a pitch to Jones or Cox has been pretty, but it should be happening far more often. Our best games with the pitch seemed to be FSU and Miss State.

The reasons: QB's slowness with the option, OL letting DL's bust up plays too soon, etc. But, the bottom line is we don't run the triple option with the smoothness and success we need. We don't run it nearly as well as Navy ran it for Paul Johnson and we don't run the option as well as Myers, Sims, Head, and Rucker did in Pepper's first year in '74.

The reason for optimism - we are 7-3 without running the offense very well. Remember how dismal we ran the thing at the Spring game. It has looked a lot better this Fall. But, it has a long way to go and it will get better. For some reason, the transition is taking awhile to get the option keep and pitch down pat. But, when it improves, our offense will be amazing. Hopefully, we'll have it down next season.
