I'd never be in favour of breaking the rivalry... but to think that Tech wouldn't have plenty of old rivals clammoring to take a shot at that slot is just plain ignorant... remember MeluvUgag... TECH was a dominating force in the old southern conference and in the original SEC... We reopen our long rivalry with Auburn next season, and many fans here on North Ave. would love to see us compete on a more regular basis with Alabama, UT, or LSU...
Rivalries and strength of schedule are conflicting concepts that AD's struggle to come to terms with. For instance, Navy, a traditional TECH rival was a dominating force in college football for 40 years... students, alum and families established traditions of going to Annapolis every other year for a variety of reasons... now Navy is no longer a strong opponent but the traditional rivalry exists so should TECH keep them as a regular opponent to continue a fun, tradition laden trip to Maryland or should the AD abandon a long tradition and seek stronger opponents on the ever changing college football landscape? Not an easy question...
My point is that UGag and TECH have a rivalry that makes no sense for either school to stop...
There are so many things that create rivalries, the football game is merely an extension of the rivalry... I mean it's not often that the employees can get one up on the boss... So every once in awile when UGag wins the little workers can sit and gloat in their cubicles...
