Do you think Joe should have won the heisman in '99?

Dayne got it because of a career achievement, not the 1999 season. Joe deserved it. It's too bad neither one turned into a great pro..if only Joe was a bit taller.

Had Joe not shredded his knee in Europe, he would have got another shot in the NFL. Until his injury he was the best QB by far in the league.

Had we won ONE more game that year, especially the Virginia game, Joe would have won the Heisman. He deserved it anyway.

Please tell me that you mean the best QB in NFL Europe?

On topic: Yes, he deserved the Heisman. Without Ron Dayne, Wisconsin still rolled their way to at least 8 victories that season. Without Lil Joe, I think GT wins maybe 4 games that season.

Dayne also had all of those yards when Big 10 defenses were even more glacially slow than they are today.

As has been said, Dayne's award was a career achievement, which is NOT what the Heisman is supposed to be about. I think the Wake Forest loss probably cost him the award. Win that game and we might have been in a higher ranked bowl than the Gator and he would have had another chance to showcase his talents. It's amazing how we seem to always be missing something big, at that time it was defense.

Our lack of defense lost the award - it had nothing to do with Joe's performance.

beej is right. The WF game killed his chances. Going into that game, he was at the top of everyone's watch list, but a loss to Wake dropped him from the top spot. A Heisman QB can't lose to Wake Forest.

His other losses were to BC and FSU that year. The Boston College game was the 1st game of the year and the FSU game was possibly his best game even though we lost, so neither of those hurt him as much as the WF loss late in the season.

Lost to UVA in Charlottesville too.

On a hook-and-ladder play, thrown by their 4th string QB as time expired, that went 80 yards.

I forgot about losing to Virginia in 1999, but the hook and ladder play was in 2001 (unless they did it to us twice, I can't remember).

We put up 38 points in 1999 so that wouldn't hurt Joe's numbers too much for the Heisman. Our defense just made every game a shoot out.

Heisman voting is done before the bowl games.

And, yes, I did mean the best QB in NFL-Europe.

Really?

I can't brain today. I have the dumb.

His 3 picks vs Wake nuked it for him.

Now that you mention it, Wake Forest has really been a thorn in our side. Just off the top of my head...

They cost us a bowl in 1986
They cost us a Heisman in 1999
They cost us an ACC Championship in 2006

We need to get them off the schedule permanently.

Yes and no.

I read a comment from a writer that year that said WTTE, "Heiman winners don't lose to Wake Forest, even with no defense."

Fair or not, team performance plays into the Heisman consideration.

Joe won many games (all of them?) despite the poor defense, but he didn't 'have a perfect season himself and that's what it wouldl have took to overcome our poor defense.

The Wake game didn't kill it for Lil Joe, the 8-4 record did it. Statistically he was off the charts, but our team record his senior year sucked for the #1 offense in the country.

Technically 8-3 at the time of the vote. I agree he would have won it at 9-2, with the two losses being FSU and UVA, which is why the Wake loss killed his chances.

Gah, we went 8-4 with Joe Hamilton as a senior QB? I'd forgotten what MEDIOCRITY that season turned out to be. (lol)
