if we beat u(sic)ga this year?

You have to think 3 out of 4 against the mutts gets him basically a contract so hefty that he could stay here until he retires.

A Hewitt-like contract should be a firing offense for a Tech AD - just doesn't make sense. I don't believe Coach Johnson is interested in leaving Tech. If we would like to keep him interested, I believe he's more interested in Tech committing to increased funding for assistant coaches and football staff than in a big increase in his own pay. Hopefully this will be possible with alumni support and as we finish paying Hewitt.

NO! Not that he has been a poor coach. He has done an excellent job but another Hewitt debacle would bankrupt the athletic department so bad we couldn't get a game of jacks.

I probably should have worded it differently. I was trying to get at what point would we offer to basically keep him on until he retires (which is more or less how I viewed the Hewitt contract). Essentially give him security to know that he's not going to be fired. I highly doubt he'll ever lose motivation and I doubt anyone tries to steal him away, but if we could give him assurances and let him retire here, wouldn't a lengthy contract be ideal for everyone.

I agree the Hewitt contract as written was horrible for us since it has crippled our spending for anything athletic for quite sometime. Was the issue so much the contract though or the fact that we got so little in return?

Something you need to think about is that Hewitt was only 42 years old when he got that crazy contract. He had at least 20 years worth of coaching left, maybe a good bit more. Paul Johnson is already 60. Any contract over 5 years could be the last for Paul, depending on how long he wants to go. (Though, it wouldn't surprise me if he coaches into his 70's if he wants.)

Pretty sure cpj could have coached at Nebraska if he wanted. He wants to stay at tech

Thinking about this ever again is like asking yourself "Should I turn on my oven and then sit on it?" after you've already, for whatever reason, just recovered from doing that very thing.
