Does Gailey realize this isn\'t the NFL?

On the Chan Gailey show today, a caller asked about Suggs and some of the problems he has having like not looking off receivers etc. While Gailey did say Suggs could improve, he once again trotted out this tired argument that Suggs has a 58 percent completion percentage, more TD's than INT's (7 to 6) , and a qaurterback rating of 120. Those numbers may be fine in the NFL but he hasn't been throwing against the Tampa Bay defense. Suggs is the 7th rated passer in the ACC behind only an option QB at Wake Forest and Simmons at Clemson who was struggling enough that Bowden was threatening to bench him. Suggs numbers are worse when you consider we've played the weaker half our schedule that included Vandy, UConn, Wake Forest and BYU. I'm not blaming Suggs for everything. He's had passes dropped and the RB's have been hurting. However, if he can't do more than what he's done against the competion we've played so far, he's never going to get the job done. Gailey needs to play Bilbo and let him learn and not site a bunch of phony stats that fall apart with a little bit of analysis.

Oh, I absolutely agree! Gailey should go on the air and talk about how his players suck and how Braine tricked him and how he doesn't know dick about football compared to Tech fans. He's such a mealy-mouthed master of cliches, he wouldn't understand coaching if Beeware himself explained it.

Of course, I don't think Gailey should say AJ is stinking up the place. He could have left at simply saying that AJ needs to work on some things and he feels like he is going to get better. He doesn't need to site statistics that make it look Suggs is doing a great job when a closer look at them shows that isn't the case. I really thought AJ would do well at the start of the year but it is painfully obvious he is never going to get the job done. If Gailey runs the spread offense and plays Bilbo against UVA, I'll give him credit even if Tech loses 38-10.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">I would have to say that I am in agreement with you 3518... I really hate to say that I have lost confidence in AJ's ability to get the job done... maybe in time he can... but I would rather take my chances with Bilbo right now... hoping that AJ can get his struggles past him and become a better QB and leader... in my opinion, the thing missing most of all from both sides of the ball is leadership.... we simply have no leadership right now.. the offensive leader was carted off the field against BYU...

I am beginning to think that Gailey has underestimated the college game though... he has spoken of challenges in regards to the NCAA rules... and now this...

"There's a lot of things going on [at the college level]," Gailey said. "Instead of 45 lives in the NFL, you have 100 lives to deal with. I'm working a little in football and a lot in other things, too."

I would say that this has been a wake up season for Gailey

That statement would actually make me think he's LEARNING, rather than being gifted by the football oracle with the perfect knowledge of the inner workings of a college football program.

Let's see, let's say you're working for one company, and you have 45 people under you. You're doing just fine, then you move to another company, but there you have 100 people under you, thousands of rabidly passionate fans hanging on your every word, an overbearing governing body whose rules you must learn and follow immediately, and a new way of doing business altogether. Do you think you'd walk in and be perfect immediately? No? wow, I guess that means you 'have no clue.'

Re: Does Gailey realize this isn\'t the NFL?

I like your analogy about a company with 100 employees.

Chan's failure to criticize his players or coaches publicly looks like good management to me. However, his actions ( or inactions) are a bit confusing. Either he can't pull the trigger or believes the current alignment is best for now.

I'll withhold my judgment (publically) until the end of the season or until Chan starts criticizing his coaches or players in public.

In my opinion (including a corporate comparison), if you are a true LEADER it doesn't matter if you are leading 10 people or 10,000 people - thats about the lamest argument I have EVER heard !!!!

Re: Does Gailey realize this isn\'t the NFL?

Techie, you raise valid points. I didnt take your question to infer Gailey should slam college players publicly, but Bellyseries tends to go a little overboard in his zeal to provide a "Hive" type of defense to anything even questioning the current staff.

Many of these same Tech "fans" are UGA'ers in disguise on the boards, others were hoodwinked by smooth talking spinners as past coaches. Infamous quotes by O"Leary was like a tape recorder: "the players didnt make plays".

The bottom line is Gailey's comments express a degree of satisfaction with the way things are. That is the scariest thing.

Jacketguy,

You said that in time maybe AJ can get the job done. Well, he's had three years to learn the college game, and this is all that he has to show for it? Time for him to step aside and let someone play who will actually score points and will put people in the stands.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">It's not just a matter of leadership. It's personnel management. Clearly, Chan can't just say "Follow me, Follow me to freedom!" and have every player on that team fight like warrior poets to win their freedom.

He's learning a new trade, in a way. True, its the same trade as before, but with different industry standards. Organizing yourself to manage twice and many employess, while doing the same job, but working with new assistants, would take some getting used to, and your performance could understandably suffer in the short run.

Besides, perhaps YOUR argument should be considered lame. Of course, you didn't HAVE an argument outside of that you didn't like mine. Neither did you have any evidence to refute mine, nor any remote trace of logical discussion.

Oh well, I guess you can't expect intelligent discussion from everyone...

Re: Does Gailey realize this isn\'t the NFL?

Father Wasp, you expressed my thoughts very clearly. I think that there may be a bunch of "Jacket Fans" on this board who are nothing more than Ugag-ers in disguise. They say all manner of negative things and play off emotions rather than facts.

I have read posts from legitimate bulldogs and have enjoyed dialog with them. But I despise the treachery of a mole bent on destruction. It reminds me of a miniscule version of verbal terrorism.

Re: Does Gailey realize this isn\'t the NFL?

Sad to say, I agree with the A.J. analysis. I'm glad he's on the team, but it's become obvious he doesn't have the big play abiility necessary of a major D1-A football program. If we're gonna lose, why not build for the future while we're at it? Go ahead and put in Bilbo, get the kinks worked out now, and have him ready to go next year as the definite leader. A.J. is a good, solid backup, but not much beyond that. There's a reason he's not at Tennessee anymore. Is Tech that much less of a program with that much weaker a schedule that he should come here and be great after losing his starting job in Tennessee. Clausen is good, but he's no phenom. Anyway, nothing personal to AJ (not like he's reading this anyway, players shouldn't read boards), but it's time to be forward thinking. Bilbo has displayed the big play ability, but he lacks the consistancy. How do you become more consistant? Experience! Crazy thought, I know.
