I have been waiting to see the posts here and the hive to see people's thoughts on the game and the team.

The D is outstanding and probably the best we have had in 6 years.

The O is horrible and probably the worst we have had in 6 years. (Joe's freshman year)

Unless WHOLESALE changes are made I think we could lose the next 5 games. I see these posts on how we can do this or that. Hopefully I am wrong and this post will be thrown up in my face.

The combo of Billy and Suggs is not working. Honestly, I feel that Billy is more responsible than our current QB. We have GREAT WR's that have been rendered useless, because we cannot get them the ball.

What concerns me the most is that our OFFENSE is a talented bunch of players. It reminds me of Maryland the year before fridge got there and ND the year before Willingham got there.

I hope I am wrong. We will find out in NC. NC is not a very good acc team and we will see how our Off performs.

I REALLY HOPE I AM WRONG

I hope you are too, law-bee, but there seems to be a trend with the offense.

You are right. The passing attack has been bad and has gotten worse with every game. The passing game will need to get MUCH sharper and someone will need to step up at RB or we could lose every remaining game with the excpetion of Duke. On the positive side, if the offense comes together then we could have a really good team considering how good our defense has played.

Good points law-bee. I hope we don't lose as many as you fear, but we are tettering, and anything could happen. I do agree with your thoughts on O'Brien, and the problems he has created (or not solved) with Suggs. Suggs is a good, talented guy who is being used improperly. Many on this board confuse this discussion about Suggs/O'Brien with a lack of team loyalty. But facts are facts. All the boos that have many panties in wads now are due to O'Brien (and Gailey) not making obviously needed adjustments and changes. I know no one who dislikes Suggs. Everyone hopes he rebounds from that horrible showing. But...Hey O'Brien... change the plays. Taylor the offense to Suggs's strenghts. Play Bilbo some. He is too talented to be left on the sidelines!!!
.
And you are right. Our defense kicked ass!!!!

BOO

Y'all are being plain silly getting on O'Brien's case to this degree. First of all, if you think that Buck is not involved in this offense, then I have some swamp land in the Sahara desert that I want to sell you.
Buck carries around the playsheet and is in O'Briens ear on his headphone on virtually every play call. If it is a crucial situation, and a timeout is called, Buck generally will do all the talking to O'Brien and the QB and even call the dang play.
If Buck wanted Bilbo in the game...he would have been in the game. You are foolish if you think otherwise.
The problems on offense, so far, begin with the o-line. We have a significant dropoff in our o-line coaching from virtually any previous o-line coach we have had. That absolutely killed us at klimpsum and although somewhat better against BYU, the o-line is still not there yet.
Suggs has not played consistent yet, but obviously has potential. He has made some bad decisions, but he also has had many, many passes dropped. The wide receiver play has also decreased from past years and may also be due to a downgrade in coaching.
The play-calling in the second half of the BYU game improved considerably and resulted in a big win.
I think we will be fine on offense if the line play will improve. Suggs will continue to improve and we do need to get Bilbo into the game. We are lucky to have a fine coach like O'Brien here and I, for one, would like to see Buck let him do his job and not try to dictate so much, especially since he said he wouldn't.
But, of course, he also said that Bilbo was too good not to play, and that he wouldn't just let him stand beside him on the sideline. And that Hollings would get "25 carries" per game (not 35+ after a sprained knee on a hot humid day).

THE BUCK STOPS WITH BUCK!

UNC, Wake, Maryland and UVA are all winnable games w/the defense that we saw on Sat. The question is whether or not O'brien/Gailey can tailor the offense to what Suggs can do as well as find more ways to get the ball into Watkins, Glover and J. Smith's hands. The defense from Sat. is good enough to keep us in every game that we will play this year (yes, even F$U and Ugag). It is now incumbent upon the coaching staff to scale down the offense so that it can be successful.

The formula of: Great defense + great special teams + conservative offense = success can work.

BeeWare, the only word we have at this time is O'Brien will be allowed to call his own plays. If that has changed, it has not been reported to the media or us fans.

After saying that, none of us really knows who is running the offense at this time.

However, Gailey is responsible for the bottom line efficiency on both the offense and defense. If he is too involved with offense, he should step back if he is causing confusion. If he is not involved with the offense, he might consider getting involved.

Beeware the eternal hypocrite.

When things go well he gives the credit to O'Brien when they go poorly it must be Gailey's fault.

In addition he does not know very much about football:

The bottom line on the offense is Suggs is taking way too long to make decisions. The blocking in total is as good or better than last year and the run blocking is significantly better than last year.

Wake up Beeware from your Seatle Bowl induce fog. We have not stopped anybody in our base defense since 1990 and we will not do it this year with the players we have on the defensive line.

I see bits and pieces that I agree with on this thread.
IMHO The Line is not giving Suggs enough time for a 5 or 7 step drop. O'Brian has been calling plays that require 5 to 7 step drops and this sets Suggs up for failure. The opposing team does not need to respect the long ball not because Suggs lacks arm strength but because he lacks the protection for his recievers to get down field. Bottom line...Billy needs to set up Suggs for success. Much in the same way Fridge won the game vs Clemson in 97. We could not stop the tigers pass rush so we concentrated on beating them with short passes. Ham got beat up alot upon releasing the pass but we were able to move the ball and win the game.
Just one fan's thoughts.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">83jacket,

While Beeware certainly had one too many hits from the bong partying in Seattle, I disagree w/you regarding the defense. The defensive play that I saw in the second half vs. Clemson and against BYU all game was very, very good. By using lots of substitution and moving guys around, the d-line played well. Plus, don't forget w/the magnificent closing speed of our linebackers, they can make up for the sins of not having the monster DT that we would all like to have. Plus, the cornerbacks have played much better this year than in year's past (so far).

No, I do not think that our defense (and team) is completely loaded and not w/out potential problems, but with the defensive effort in the aforementioned situations, if applied to future games will keep us in EVERY game left on the schedule. Again, the key for me is the offense being scaled down and/or better tailored for AJ to have success.

Another point is that some people are forgetting that the ACC is down a bit this year, IMO. UNC, Maryland and UVA do not have very good offenses at all. Yes, UNC and Maryland are well coached and on the road, so they will not be easy. I still contend that the next four games are very, very winnable and we might just be in a pretty good spot heading into November.

It is funny that we are hearing the same thing about Gailey that we heard about O'Leary - that he is somehow holding BOB back. Yea, if it weren't for our head coaches, we would still be the exciting, effecient offense that we were under Friedgen. We've had 2 straight head coaches tell us that BOB is calling the plays. It is time for BOB to take the credit and blame for the success of the offense.
