After seeing a tackle made in one of the games this weekend, I have a feeling that some of the coaches will soon disallow any player from having dreadlocks hanging out of their helment.

I didn't see any of that in the Army / Navy game. (LOL)

Did you see the one in the game earlier in the week where one of the player's locks was laying on the field.

I heard Morgan Burnett derives his power from the dreads. Kinda like Samson.

If he continues to grow them he will only get more picks.

the coaches won't have to disallow dreads. the players will begin suffering consequences and change on their own. ricky williams and edge james cut their dreads after getting snatched down by their hair.

Darwin Rules will take effect. No need to outlaw something that will correct itself.

I once read that the reason men began cutting their hair short is that long hair gave them a disadvantage in hand-to-hand battles.

Truth?

what about defensive players?

Why does it matter what their hairstyle is if it doesn't affect the game?

You raise a very interesting point. Why mandate anything if our government mandates more than we already want and need.

BUT !!!!!

In this case, it very well could affect the game since all the defensive player was able to grab onto was the player's dreadlocks.

Uhmmmmmmm, enough to make one ponder.

By virtue of the fact that a military haircut is considered a required part of the uniform.

Back in the civilian world, I recall hearing a while back that a player claimed freedom of religious expression for why he wouldn't cut his dreads. But, I don't remember who it was, or what the claimed religion was.

And at some point a player has to ask themselves what they feel is more important. Having the dreads hanging out so that they look cool and it's easier for fans to spot them? Or not increasing liability to the team by having something extra that an opponent can grab hold of.

I'm thinking it's more along the lines of the 340+ days of the year when they actually where them for (gasp) themselves!

Or maybe for the young college co-eds that think they're hot????

who gives a flyin ---- what the kids hairstyle is? can they play, are they well behaved and do they play for the team or for themselves. those are the questions.

Just out of curiosity, how many times have you seen a player dragged down by his hair? I've only seen it happen once and it was in the game mentioned that took place this weekend. I think it is a fairly rare occurrence. It must have hurt terribly to have that lock yanked out of his head.

Josh Nesbitt had a hand warmer on against Miami and was dragged down by it. Should we outlaw wearing hand warmers too?

If a kid wants to take the risk of being dragged down that painfully then that's up to him, as far as I'm concerned :)

Not to mention all the people that get tackled by the jersey...get rid of them! And cleats too!

If a coach wants to say "no dreads" that's probably a fair rule...but there's no reason for the NCAA, conferences, federal government, or the European union to be involved.

I'd like to agree, but I've always wondered this: the dreads cover up the players' nameplates, and I'm pretty surprised the league would allow this, as it's not good for the fans. This isn't an issue in college because the NCAA doesn't require nameplates, but I think(?) the NFL does.

If they start getting dragged down by them why not just wad them up and get a bigger helmet - more padding. A bun would be quite fashionable!

This can't happen soon enough IMHO. It's an embarressment and a disappointment to see hair hanging out of any football player's helmet. Especially a Tech player.
Hopefully dreadlocks will quickly go out of style.

What, exactly, is "embarressment and a disappointment" about this? Are we living in the 1950s? Seriously, can you please elaborate.
