Early 09 Top 25

LSU picked a very bad time to finally get a good QB - a month before our game with a month to practice him up. With him in their system I would not be surprised at all to see them top-10 next year, but I think putting them preseason #5 based on one game is a stretch.

VT is hilariously overrated. Wow, they beat BC and Cincy, woop-dee-do.

OU is overrated. Sorry, the Big 12's crap defense got brutally exposed as completely inept. Highest scoring offense ever puts up 14 points against a non-Big 12 UF.

GT is overrated (ducks). #11? We have a lot of questions remaining to be answered and we won't know much until spring practice or even a game or two into the season. Yet another reason I hate pre-season rankings.

Georgia. Haha suckers from preseason #1 to preseason #18.

#19 Kansas - Uh, no.

#23 Notre Dame - Uh, no.
 
How does VT get ranked so damn high every year? Anybody got the rough numbers on pre-season rankings vs end-of-season rankings for VT?
 
I can think of one recent pre-season ranking that didn't quiet pan out the way they wanted it to.

Not including this season VT is a +21 since 1989. In other words, they've been cumulatively ranked 21 spots higher in the end of season polls than in the preseason polls.

2003 and 2001 were they're only big drops with a -10 and -18 respectively. Other than that they've been mostly even over the past decade outside of a 16 spot jump in 2004 and a 9 spot jump in 1999.

Well, with us being ranked like that, it'll be a test to see if the team is ready to do something meaningful.

Plus, I'm interested in seeing if they put us and VT against each other early or if we'll both be playing deep in the conference stretch. Either way, you can't say VT will get an overrated ranking, they're just being cushioned for a season opening loss against Alabama.

That's not a good metric for being overrated. Why? because preseason polls aren't a good metric for anything, including how overrated a team is. All it says is the pre-season ranks big name powers highly, and no big-name power can finish top five every year.
