Given the economic background of this topic I could have posted it in Off Topic. But, since I want to pick brains specifically on how it will affect AA programs, I'm posting it here.

I received another fundraiser email from Ma Tech a couple days ago. I deleted it, so I'm going off memory. Given the economic downturn, there is a reduction in state & federal money coming into the Institute. I can't remember the exact amount, but $26M sticks in my head. As a result, there have been changes planned: Hiring freezes, tuition increases, cut backs in landscaping and other services, etc. Obviously Tech isn't in a vacuum. Other universities and institutes have had to make similar sacrifices.

Now compare that to the some of the activity going on at various school programs. Firing of less than perfect coaches, shopping for new ones, pay increases to existing ones to ensure retention, etc. I can't help but wonder at what point Athletic Associations start to feel the pinch.

Maybe cuts come out of stuff like swimming, lacross, or other collegiate sports that no one watches. Or perhaps football programs have had to make cuts as well, and it just hasn't been widely reported.

Paul Johnson is about to get a raise too.

EDIT: To clarify - he has certainly earned it after this year's results.

Why use median salaries for administrators and average salaries for the rest? Seems misleading to me....

The AA does not receive any money from the state. It is technically an independent organization. It will not be affected directly.

However, the indirect effect, due to lesser donations, lesser ticket sales, etc. will probably hurt us bad. However, I don't see it hurting us to the point where we cut programs. We had been in the financial red for about 10 years straight before DRad came in, and we survived that. He has since brought us back in the black, and we should do just fine.
