People have been saying recently that our defense has been good this season, but that hasn't been my impression at all. I also thought our offense has been fairly good outside the Clemson game. Special teams has also been pretty good, but I don't know how they factor in punting. I decided to check efficiency ratings to see how they rated our units.

http://www.espn.com/college-football/statistics/teamratings/_/tab/efficiency

Offense: 46th
Defense: 97th
Special Teams: 7th
Overall: 64th

The offense is not quite as high as I expected, and the defense is even worse than I thought. IMO this is a bigger problem than OL, QB, playcalling, or anything else. You can't expect to beat good teams when your defense flat out can't get off the field.

Thoughts? Anybody surprised by these ratings?

It doesn't account for the 14 points that they didn't give up last week. I don't think that is an accurate reflection of where we stand on a points per play basis.

"Team efficiencies are based on the point contributions of each unit to the team's scoring margin, on a per-play basis."

Sounds like it does. Regardless, it's obviously not perfect but 97th is pretty damn bad.

I would bet they are just taking total points allowed.

Perhaps, but that would be a pretty big flaw. It would seemingly make it pointless to account for garbage time, strength of schedule, etc. if you don't even consider defensive touchdowns.

Regardless, if that bumped us from 97th to 80 or even 70, that is not good.

Here are my grades for Tech O and D for the season so far:

BC
O: C
D: B+

Mercer
O: B
D: B

Vandy
O: B+
D: B

Clemson
O: F (Worst offense I've seen in awhile)
D: C- (The defense gave the offense a lot of chance in second half but the first half was a shitshow)

Miami
O: D (those two turnovers were complete horseshit)
D: B- (They gave the offense enough chances to try and come back)

Pitt
O: C+ (We looked great at times but still couldn't manage to put the game away at the end)
D: F (Complete shitshow)

My takeaway from your grading sheet is that you don't know shit about football.

Well, I posted efficiency calculations because I thought they would give us a better perspective, but öööö it let's go with personal ratings!

Why don't you go öööö yourself? How's that sound?

So you can dish out the criticism but can't take it, huh? Good luck at the 3 Dollar Cafe tomorrow night. I hope CPJ punches you in the dick.

Ted Roof coaches the most Charmin-soft of zone pass defenses, and if the front four can't get any pass rush on their own they're going to get picked apart by any competent offense. It was that way back in the 90's when he was here with O'Leary. It's that way now. The defense is coached to mediocrity, at best. Force teams to orchestrate longer drives and hope they shoot themselves in the foot at some point. It's very, very passive, and I'm not sure it has to be. They've recruited some pretty good players on that defense.

And the run defense is just inconsistent game to game and even drive to drive within games. With that said, any team with a dual threat QB is going to give them fits. The next time a Ted Roof defense stops a QB draw in the red zone will be the first, for instance.

Honestly I wonder how much better we would be if we had guys who could consistently rush the passer. We do a pretty good job of limiting big plays and forcing opponents into 3rd and long, but that's useless when they can just sit in the pocket and pick out a receiver past the marker.

BTW, we rank 113th in sacks, with only 6 on the season. That's by far our biggest team weakness, IMO. Simmons has shown potential but is inconsistent. Everyone else looks totally ineffective on pass rush, and our blitzes seem to get picked up pretty easily.
