Georgia Tech blew its chance to command the ACC’s Coastal Division, but the Jackets are still alive.
The race could come down to a three-way or even a four-way tiebreaker. Virginia (3-1) leads the division and will go to the Dec. 6 championship game in Tampa if it wins out. The Cavaliers are followed by Georgia Tech (3-2), Virginia Tech (2-2), North Carolina (2-2), Miami (2-2) and Duke (1-2).
In a three-way or four-way tie, the first tiebreaker is combined head-to-head record, then division record.
The Jackets have lost to Virginia and Virginia Tech, beaten Duke and have yet to face North Carolina and Miami.
For Tech to have a chance, the Jackets likely must win out and have the Cavaliers lose at least one of their remaining games against Miami, Wake Forest, Clemson and Virginia Tech.
Further, the Jackets can’t win two- or three-team tiebreakers with Virginia and Virginia Tech.
“It’s really frustrating,” defensive end Derrick Morgan said. “We had an opportunity to put ourselves in first place in our division and we let it get away from us.”
His counterpart, Michael Johnson, struck a more upbeat note.
“We’re not out of it,” he said. “We’ve just got to go back and keep playing, and hopefully things can go our way.”
