In a critical step toward securing stability for the conference, ESPN has agreed to pick up its option to continue broadcasting ACC sports through 2036, sources told ESPN on Thursday.

With the television deal settled, the ACC is now working toward a settlement with Clemson and Florida State that could end those schools' ongoing lawsuits against the conference.

ESPN had until Feb. 1 to pick up the option on a 20-year contract signed in 2016 that helped launch the ACC Network. Had ESPN declined, the partnership would have ended after the 2027 season.

There's a pretty interesting negotiating point for distribution of funds rules of ACC dispersments which is that a bonus amount will be paid based on how much the "brand" of each school affects viewership/interest in the ACC.

Rewards "name programs" like UNC hoops and (supposedly) FSU football.

Less for the "Wake" teams and more for the "UNC" teams (for BBall, anyways).
I would dispute perhaps that FSU is a big name draw, but I'd need to see the data. Iirc, Tech was the most watched team in the ACC last year, so we should get a nice bonus if that happened in the future, no?

Thank God. Now the ACC ADs can get together and vote to allow F$U and Clemson to receive more of the TV money to help ensure the continued enshittification of the League that F$U and Clemson wanted so desperately to leave.

With how trash this conference is, I fully expect payouts based on brand instead of actual numbers or records.

Brand is measured, at least in part, based on actual numbers and records

Maybe 10-yr records not just the last season, but any other measure of "brand value" is moronic. It is always properly based on established metrics.

Pretty funny in an ESPN article:

Why would ESPN not do this? This is a bargain for ESPN, and they are laughing while having the ACC by the balls at this point.

The ACC will have the worst payout per school of the P4 conferences in 3 years. The B12 will get a new combo deal, and both the B1G and sec will have new deals. The B1G and sec deals will be 2x+ payout per school.

This agreement does not mean anything more than a PR release. If the B1G and sec want to expand again, they will do so.

While I don't mind uneven payouts, the rest of the conference should not let Clemson and FSU hold them over a barrel 1) they haven't proved they have another higher paying conference ready to pick them up - in fact, odds are they don't have a landing spot 2) they aren't as good as they think particularly with establishment of the portal and NIL 3) the penalties for leaving are extremely high serving as a disincentive. So give them some extra money but don't overdo it.

2031 new TV contracts for other P4 conferences could be interesting. If Big12 could sign a much more lucrative contract than current ACC contract, that would put some pressure on ACC defections. A 2031 ACC revenue shortfall along with lower penalties for leaving ACC could improve economics of defecting. However 2031 is so far off that who knows what happens by then.

There may be pressure on ACC to try to sign a new TV contract prior to 2031 to counteract the above. Negotiating the contract early will give TV providers leverage.

What? Clemson has pretty much been the ACC’s saving grace on the big stage for a decade on the football field in the CFP era. 2 MNC’s to their name. Clemson is in a much stronger position to bolt to the B1G over FSU.

FSU’s problem is the B1G nor the sec wants to deal with them at this point.

Reality is, if $$$ talks, and the B1G, sec truly don’t want either Clemson or FSU, the B12 would take them tomorrow which is a value add for their next deal.

ACC is the only one of the P4 who has absolutely no bargaining power.
