After the season is over everyone associated with the GT program will be evaluated.
Coaches: Did they prepare the team for what to expect? Did they motivate the team week in and week out? Did they make the right decisions on game day? Did they recruit the right players.
Players: Did they prepare themselves in the offseason? Did they prepare themselves on the practice field and in the film room? Did they play their hardest on gameday?
Fans: Did they help to create some positive energy around the program? Did they show up on gameday? Did they help to create a home field advantage? Did they do everything they could to make the current players and coaches successful on the field.
First and foremost football is a game of momentum. Bad teams with momentum can play with the best teams in the country for as long as that momentum will last. That is why the home field advantage is so important in football. When a team(no matter how mediocre) has its home stadium rocking and rolling, it is almost impossible for the visiting team to have much success. Almost all fans know this, so one would think that a team's fans would be "rocking and rolling" from the opening kickoff till the final gun. Strangely, that is not what happens at all.
When things don't go right on the field, most fans turn on their team. Phrases like "they stink" or "they didn't come to play today" are heard throughout the stadium. I know I've done it many times.
When things are at their lowest, you would think the home fans would rise to their feet and let their team hear that they were behind them 100%. The fans have the power to control the momentum of the game. But, we all know what typically happens. Instead of rising up in support, many fans use their first "football fan" ammendment right to boo. The "boo bird" is the state bird of the visiting team. There is nothing like the sweet sound of boos to the ears' of the visitors. It makes them feel so great to know their play has helped turn the home team's own fans against them. Their victory can't be far behind. When the home team's fans are booing, the visitors have complete control of the all important momentum factor, which is everything in the game of football.
Why do fans do it? Who knows, we are all guilty. I can't say I boo, but I've checked out plenty of times. I guess the bottom line is just like the players and coaches, sometimes we don't get it done.
We have our coaches and players for the 2003 season. We have a coach that many doubt, we have a roster that many feel is undermanned. Well, like it or not this is our 2003 Georgia Tech Football team. We will evaluate their success in December and we can try to figure out what improvements or changes need to be made then.
However, if you are true fan of GT, you should do everything you can to create a sense of excitement around the program. Do Everything you can to let the players and coaches know that you want them to be successful in 2003. Do everything you can to give Bobby Dodd Stadium a true home field advantage so that our team can build some powerful momentum. A winner doesn't make excuses. A winner doesn't worry about things he can't control. A winner does everything he can to help his team win until the final gun sounds.
