Evict UM and Bring in WVU!

I think we raided the wrong team from the Big East - I'm good with VT (well, semi-good) and BC, but bringing Miami in was a major mistake. West Virginia would have been a very nice pickup, and made for good rivalries with VT and UVa. Even Syracuse and Pitt would have been an improvement over UM!

The acc is like Frankenstein. Adding all of these parts to a weak original body was asking for trouble.
Truth is, the acc should have never been expected to surpass what it originally intended. That is, a cute little basketball league headquartered in Greensboro.
Clemson was the token football team that brought any respectability to the conference.

The Big East has to be laughing now.
It really is a shame we removed ourselves from the sec.

I would have liked the initial plan of BC, Syracuse, and Miami if not for Syracuse not having a baseball team, which is more important to me than it is to some I'm sure.

West Va. would have been a nice addition, but didn't carry the notoriety at the time that Virginia Tech did. If Miami can clean itself up, I think the conference will be okay. I wouldn't want to go to see a game at the Orange Bowl though, probably the last stadium I'd like to visit in the ACC, except for maybe Wallace Wade Stadium.

This entire deal had everything to do with

TV money for the ACC.

I agree WV would be fun to have in the ACC, but unfortunately it's all about the mighty $ that runs the engine for major college sports anymore.

I don't feel because of what's happened this past week it's a bad things we're in the ACC. I don't think feel ashamed at all we left the SEC. Good for Coach Dodd when he did it!!

We're better off where we are in Football, Basketball, and Baseball!!

ACC will rebound from this just fine.

GO JACKETS!!

I agree, GTT. I'm proud - for the most part - that we are in the ACC. It has helped us to build competitive programs in sports other than football. And, with the exception of Miami, it has class. I agree with the original comment that WVU would be a better member than UM, but I wouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater. It's still a good place for us.

No thanks. Miami is at least a good school and fits with the conference acadmically. The couchburners on the other hand do not.

Well..they may have a few good schools within the college...but overall they do not fit in academically. I live in Florida...and the University of Florida has the best overall academics for incoming freshman. I do not have my stats with me, but last I checked the rankings by conference of incoming freshman that scored over 600 on math.....or 600 on verbal....Miami was 10th or 11th in the ACC in each. Florida was ahead of Miami and was ranked 2nd in the SEC.

To top it off, Miami has zero requirements for student-athletes....as evidenced by their weak emphasis on classwork and behavior on/off the field. As long as an athlete passes the weak NCAA req's that is good enough for them. They are not even close to the levels of GT, Duke, Wake, or Boston College.

I don't think that WVU will stand the test of time. Miami is down, but give me a break. Their program will return. They need to get the discipline matters taken care of, but this is a streak of talent and success at WVU.

I'm looking at the data right now:

Miami
Avg Freshman GPA - 4.2
25th Percentile Midrange SAT: 1220
75th Percentile Midrange SAT: 1370
25th Percentile Midrange ACT: 27
75th Percentile Midrange ACT: 31

Florida
Avg Freshman GPA - 3.94
25th Percentile Midrange SAT: 1160
75th Percentile Midrange SAT: 1360
25th Percentile Midrange ACT: 24
75th Percentile Midrange ACT: 29

here you go

From Yahoo!

Math SAT over 600:
Duke- 95%
GT- 93%
Wake- 88%
BC- 87%
UVA- 84%

Miami and Florida are both at 74%

Verbal SAT over 600:
Duke- 94%
Wake- 85%
BC- 81%
UVA- 77%
GT- 76%

Florida is at 65% and Miami at 64%

The differences between Florida and Miami are inconsequential...but far less than the ACC standard set by the Big 5.

I hope the powers to be realize that if we act like a state school the way that UNC has acted that eventually our standards will dip. It's funny to me to not hear UNC as part of the big five and yet, their standards have dropped lower than the five shown on your list partly due to the instate ratio requirements.

hivered, you do realize

that the ACC has six Tier One and six Tier Two schools (the only BCS conference without at least one Tier Three or below members)? Miami is at the top of the Tier Two schools in the conference and is a very good fit academically for the ACC.

West Virginia, OTOH, is a Tier Three school and would NEVER be considered for ACC membership as long as academics is a consideration. Why would anyone want a school which can basically recruit and keep eligible ANYONE in our conference? We can't compete with that (and I wouldn't want to try).

While other ACC schools may have a higher overall academic ranking, most can still recruit just about anyone meeting the NCAA minimums or even below those by sending kids to Hargrave. FSU, Clemson, Miami, NC State, VPI and Maryland have many majors to hide students in. And while UNC and UVA are very highly ranked, they're also big state schools with plenty of majors to choose from.

So, it's true that WVU is about on the same level as Mississippi State academically, but I don't think they have any recruiting advantages over at least 8 of the 12 ACC schools.

UNC and GT don't 'act' like state schools they both ARE state schools. I am proud of our average SAT scores but it is a very narrow way to judge a university and most people could care less.

We're funded in large part by the taxpayers of GA so we had better let a few students in. I don't think it does the university or the state any good to bypass qualified Georgian's, to let in more foriegn kids - all with the purpose of raising our average SAT score.

West Virginia takes partials. 'Nuff said.

I agree with you as far as judging school quality. For instance, I feel like GT prepares you for more real life lessons than your more "academic" institutions that make everything like it can be read from a book or a typical model.

My main point was to emphasize the quality and level of student entering the school...the competition if you will amongst the student body. The percentage of students above certain scores is one of several ways to show the depth of potential talent in a student body.

Nah I'd rather have Miami

than WVU any day even despite the current problems UM is facing. It makes more sense as a 'Southern Rival' even though most of the students and alumni are yankees from up North anyway

I'm sorry that I'm hijacking this thread a bit, but I think that the State of Georgia gets a whole lot more from Tech as a TOP SCHOOL instead of a GOOD STATE SCHOOL. We are currently considered a major international university and that brings in money to the state of Georgia via research, coinvestments, etc. It is difficult to prove which has the best economic effect: TOP SCHOOL versus PUTTING OUT LOTS OF INSTATE GRADUATES FROM A GOOD SCHOOL. It is my opinion that you can do both and when I see UNC slowly dropping in rankings it makes me wonder if the second choice is the best choice. So far we have been rising and in my opinion we could rise to the top 3 public universities if we wanted to. Our reputation outside of Georgia is that good, in my personal experience.

This is a thread hijack but very interesting to me. Regarding being more valuable to the state - I am sure it could be quantified but I don't have the resources to do so. There aren't a lot of obvious benefits though - take by comparison Austin Texas where i travel frequently. There is a huge high tech industry base there in large part because of UT Austin. For whatever reason this has never happened in GA

Top 3 in terms of what?
