I am excited about our depth at RB for next year w/ Dwyer, Roddy, & J. Evans....plus the recruits for this year...
I hear that Roddy is a beast & will light things up next year...
We saw glimpses throughout the year & the bowl game of the passion/energy that Dwyer brings to the field...

Thoughts?

Who is our best current verbal in this year's class?
Any dark horse candidates that we may pick up a committ from as we close out the recruiting period....

yeah, a few thoughts

1 - I don't think we have ANY proven depth; all the depth you speak of is on paper
2 - Experience at RB does help....very rare to have K Moreno situation; especially in knowing WHO to pick up in blocking.
3 - if J Evans is your proven depth...he may not be here due to personal reasons (transfer)

I am not as excited about our depth, b/c I don't think we have any as its just paper depth. Until it proves out...to me we are really thin. BUT; the prospects look good and I could see us trying to get one more RB and one more QB in this class.

Well, I'm not worried about the players we have, even though few are proven. What does worry me is that with PJ's offense it seems we need more RBs than we have used in the past. I'm not as concerned about who they are at this point, just the sheer numbers. Besides, all our blocking schemes for the backs will change anyway so whether they understand Chan's schemes or not doesn't matter.

no, I am referring to RB's blocking in the 3-0...some due have that assignment on those plays, especially ones off ball or off play.

If I have learned anything about playing football and being a fan, until a player shows they can do it; there is cause for concern.

for instance, Bebe Thomas and Taylor Bennett; both were lauded pre-season, both had serious issues at their position this year and underperformed to expectations. One couldn't pass, one couldn't catch.

IMO we don't have much proven depth which concerns me. I also agree about the numbers...which is why I think we take another RB and QB this class.

i wouldnt say depth i would say potential..i think dwyer will be a star..and ive caught a couple of practices and roddy jones is a beast he just runs people and over and him and dwyer are good friends so thats a positive.

imho....We are actually pretty thin there in terms of scholly athletes and need more RB commitments in this class. 3-4 SB's and 2 BB's will play each game assuming no injuries. I know for a fact that we are looking to bring in 1-2 more RB's in addition to Peeples and Watson.

Right now...best guess is:

BB:
Jonathan Dwyer
Quincy Kelly
Trevor Bray
Richard Watson

SB:
Roddy Jones
Tyler Evans (still a walk-on)

SB:
Jamaal Evans
Embry Peeples

We need at least one more SB with this class...and they will be guaranteed not to redshirt.

Anyone gotta bead on where Luke Cox might fit in?

Luke (6-0, 254) is stacked up with a lot of FB types right now...as well as Lance Walls (6-1, 238). Lance will be a Jr-R and Luke will be a So-R.

You have to think the scholarship FB's will get the most looks such as Quincey Kelly (6-0, 238) and Trevor Bray (6-0, 244). Both of them will be So-R next season.

Also remember that the new offense does not have the true blocking FB, but a B-Back that is more of a large tailback that can also block. This plays even more to the strengths of Kelly and Bray. I would also expect to see Dwyer starting at this position next year. The B-back averages more rushing carries per game than any other position in the offense.

We will need more backs next year due to the 3 back offense. In the one back offense, you very seldom go 3 deep.

Only because of lack of depth, but I see Dwyer playing at both positions. He has the speed on the outside to play the SB and he prefers running out there anyway. With any injuries at all, I definitely see Dwyer playing there instead of inside BB.

I think we'll see some of Earls, Smith and/or Johnson in those positions too.

but you have to remember...typically in PJ's offense the B-back plays most of the game and splits time with another. So having 2-3 there is all u need. The SB is where I am concerned...as they run receiving routes and run the ball. You need 2deep in each SB spot that can play; and another 1-2 as freshman waiting their turn. In total u need 4 than can play, and 6-8 in the system.

I could see JJ becoming a SB...especially in catching routes and some running to keep the D honest.

Bray is coming off a torn ACL and was more a blocker than runner. Interesting to see what happens there.

QK will be the IDEAL BBack....tough runner...bruiser.

Watson on paper appears to be a fit for the BBack.

We need to land peeples, then 2 more for the SB spots...maybe 3 if we have a transfer. I wouldn't be shocked to see other positions move to SB spots either...

I agree....I think it is others that are having a hard time understanding that the B-Back gets the vast majority of the carries...not the S-back. If Dwyer is going to be the feature back...he better win the B-back position.

Regarding Bray...he was primarily a TB in high school as he runs/ran a 4.6 forty. It was bulking him up and teaching him to block that was the primary goal when he first came in. It will be interesting to see if we elect to keep him in the 230 range instead of the 244 he is at now.

Dwyer is also putting on weight quick...gaining 20 pounds over the past year....and up to 228 right now.

With bray's ACL injury and his weight I could see them asking him to be 225 range.

JD From what I hear...will be asked to stay around 215/220

I posted this before, but the top two players in carries on Navy were the quarterback and the b-back and Navy's b-back was the fastest player on the team.

Au contraire! I definitely see Dwer at the b back. What we do with the FBs and TEs on our roster remains to be seen. I think they could be employed rather effectively in our new offense. Just how will be up to CPJ.

Exciting times ahead!
