F$U thread on Papa Bowden...

Bobby Bowden is a legend and should be treated that way. He should be able to retire when he wants too. Fsu has already hired Fisher as his successor and he calls a lot of the shots anyway, so it isn't hurting the program for Bowden staying. they will be much better in the next 2 seasons as they were like Unc, Miami and us, VERY YOUNG but talented.

If P.J. has been at GT 15 to 20 years and has accomplished much while here (A couple of MNC's and numerous ACC Championships ), like Bowden, he should be able to leave on HIS terms when HE wants too, along with a nice statue of himself outside the stadium.

I really have no problem with St. Bobby downing all the unicorn blood he can squeeze from the hookers in Florida State, because it helps Tech win a football game, but also because I think he's earned the right to go out on his terms. He wants the all time win record, and he'll need to last a season longer then Zombi-Paterno to do it. He also dominated the ACC for 15 years, won a few MNCs, and made a junky, party school into a national powerhouse. He is the Florida State football program. On top of that, the team doesn't do bad. I think it's a sad comment on college football fans that they're willing to dump on a guy who won big for them because the team lost 4 games for a few years. I don't expect anything less from those people though.

So under your logic if someone builds a public traded company (like yahoo) and they run it into the ground to the detriment of investors it is their right?

How is that different than if I am a season tix holder/donor and I invest in F$U and I invest big $$$?

NO ONE PERSON is F$U or ANY OTHER MAJOR UNIVERSITY. F$U will still be around long after BB is gone. For all of BB's contributions he has been paid a multi-million dollar salary. He has done a good job so he was paid a good salary.

Last I checked, FSU wasn't run into the ground. And I have no problems whatsoever stating that Bobby Bowden is the football program there. What did they do before him, other then spend 40 years as a women's school? This isn't a school with a rich football tradition, this a school that has two eras, BSB and ASB.

It's simply my opinion that a coach with a resume like Bobby Bowdens or Joe Paternos can choose when they want to go out. It is my belief that they have earned that right.

also, a public company is OWNED by the stockholders whereas the season ticket holders nor big donors have ANY OFFICIAL VOTING RIGHTS OF ANY KIND NOR ANY OWNERSHIP OF THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM

entirely different. if you want to support and give $$, good for you, if you want to control an operation, buy stock - and it better be a helluva lot of stock

That may be a better idea for the AA though. Instead of charging us seat licenses, sell stock and give us voting rights. But then they'd actually have to listen to us...

Yeah, because listening to the boosters is working out really well for Auburn. They sure are on the upswing!

When you think Wake has won 3 in a row and the next one will be at Wake it is very interesting.

As medical science has enabled people to live healthy, longer lives it is fascinating when people hang on.

I don't see any exit stategy for Papa Bowden. I like our chances next year at Doak.

Lawbee,
just for curiosity's sake, if you were president of Fl St. U., how would you handle that situation? I agree that BB doesn't seem to be as competitive as before, but what should the university do? I wonder how many tickets are sold due to BB being the HC. I wonder how many mommas of recruit prospects look forward to seeing BB sit down at the table and brag on how good of a cook she is.

If he were to be asked to retire, resign, quit or whatever, what would it do to the fanbase at FSU? What if FSU really ticked BB off by insinuating that he should step aside?

Agreed, if he were to voluntarily retire or step aside in some degree for his successor to step in, FSU may prosper. But, I just don't see how FSU can afford anything different.

Bobby Dodd, Joe Paterno, Bear Bryant, Bobby Bowden, etc are legends in college football. Can FSU afford to gamble by doing ANYTHING to tarnish the image of BB which may backfire in FSU's face?

You do the same thing that Jerry Jones did when he thanked Tom Landry and then brought in a new coach (that won 3 superbowls).

I pray that when I get 70+ I will have the faculties or family support to know when to step down. The F$U posters have it right when they say everytime Wake comes in and beats F$U down AT F$U BB accomplishments lose some of their luster.

In the grand scheme of things it is really not a tough thing to do. Every day doctors are telling people they have cancer and have a few months to live. Just last week I was talking to a family about how their 25 y/o will receive AT LEAST 20 years in prison.

You can also look at the utilitarian view that for ever 70+ that is working at 70% is denying a 45 y/o at 100%.

Listen I am not saying you take this guy out back and shoot him. You give him a statue and you name the stadium after him and then you give him an office overlooking the field. He then will become a fundraising icon.

In fact let him run for congress like Vince Dooley did. He may be too old to coach but he certainly could fit in with Strom Thurmand and the rest of the "over the hill gang" on capitol hill
