Finally we can put \'02 behind us...Read if you want good info.
Ok, a new year is upon us and the 2002 football season is water under the bridge. Hindsight is 20-20 and it hurts that we could have been a 10-2 team and playing either tonight or tomorrow night.
After the Outback Bowl, I watched The Season: Florida State football. I watched how Adrain McPherson only completed 8 passes , but 2 went for TD's. I watched Sanford Samuels return Suggs ill-advised, errant pass for a TD.
On the last day of 2002, it was just a fitting end to the season we endured. That's right, ENDURED! We had to cope with many injuries and lows/valleys while enjoying few peaks/highs. Sure we beat undefeated and 8th ranked N.C. ST. and ended UVA's 6 game win streak.
On the other hand, the lows are numerous and countless. But that's the past.
Ok, on to 2003. Gathers is coming back, hopefully stronger than ever. Hollings is coming back, hopefully at the same speed. We need a kicker, a punter, 2 safeties, a corner(or a coroner, because some people think this is the end of GT football).
Ather Brown can step in for Recardo Wimbush. Reuben Houston or James Butler can step in for Marvious Hester. We have ACE and Sampson and P.J. Daniels to back up Hollings. No more Gordon Clinkscale or Sidney Ford, but at least we have some kind of depth at the RB position. Jimmy Dixon is back and Johnathan JAckson is coming back from the injury he sustained against Duke. No more Rhino, but we do have "Freddie". Kerry Watkins and Will Glover are gone, but we have Lekeldrik Bridges, Levon Thomas, Johnathan "Freddie" Smith, and Nate Curry.
On the line we lose Raymond-Roberts Blake and Tight Ends Will Heller and Brian Lee, but have J.P. Foschi. On D line we lose DE Fred Wright and T Gary Johnson. We need a holder to replace Hal Higgins. We lose a lot of good backups like Matt Etheridge and Gary Johnson.
Ok, now that the roster is somewhat cleared up, we need to address the offseason. I know that most of us, myself included, think that we could have done a better job on the Flats this year than CG did. The strength of our players needs to be addressed. BOB and CG need to get on the same page. The QB situation needs to be addressed. Suggs is not the answer. The question we need to ask ourselves now is, Is Bilbo the answer? Is Bilbo the answer? Or is a true freshman recruit the answer? Pena, Ball, and Carter all are good. Who knows? I don't, you don't, and neither does CG.
I am willing to give CG the 2003 season before I call for his head. I hope everyone else is too. We're all tired of losing games we are supposed to win or should win. i.e.
'98- B.C.
'99- Wake, Virginia
'00- N.C. ST., LSU
'01- Clemson, Maryland, Virginia
'02- Wake Forest, Clemson, Fresno St., maybe FSU.
I realize that during those fives seasons we have won games that we were not expected to win. i.e
'98- UGA
'00- Clemson
'02- North Carolina St., Virginia
But it's still frustrating.
I think we'll be ok. Sorry for the long post and if you read this far, I hope you enjoyed reading and I'd like to hear your thoughts.
