I was reading this unit ranking on rivals and thought it was a decent read, though unfavorable for us. http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=835859 However I did think something interesting from reading it. We are obviously very strong up front which should shut down most of the running game for opponents and pressure the qb's in the ACC. Based on the article and general knowledge we would be weak in the secondary but there really aren't many weapons at qb in the conference we will play and UNC might be the best receiving corps. It just doesn't seem like theres a complete offensive package sans Clemson which most of us chalk up as a loss already. Is this reason enough for some very positive hopes for the season? Seems as if with our strength up front and the relative weakness of other teams to hit us where it hurts downfield we could be very solid on D. This may be reiterating points made time and again but I was hoping for some thoughts.

Paul Johnson #5 in coaching?? That's a huge crock of sh*t.
Second worst secondary? Does Morgan Burnett ring a bell rivals??
Second worst offensive backfield?? That just puts the icing on the cake for the idiocy of this garbage from rivals.
Thanks for the post though GTatUSC.

Yeah, I bought the Athlon mag, and it had GT with the 3rd-ranked DL in the ACC. Riiiight.

"The lack of experience causes Georgia Tech to slip this far, though quarterback Josh Nesbitt and running back Jonathan Dwyer could make us look foolish by the end of the season."

Will Happen!

Plus is anyone else tired of everyone suckling all over Frank Beamer's balls? He's a solid coach but still has never won a natinal title. In all those years of greatness at VT, with all that incredible talent and never a single title! I consider that consistently underachieving!

I say Grobe #1, Davis/Johnson #2.... Those coordinators at clemson are just as responsible for the perennial choke job as Bowden...

Actually I can't say I disagree THAT much. They redeemed themselves w/ the Obackfield by saying the nesbitt and dwyer could/will prove themselves.

Our secondary was very weak last year..leading to a weak preseason ranking. And even if we got underrated here, I would say they overrated us at wideout/tight end.

Coaching is just b/c it is PJs first year.

We have a lot of unknowns this year, we can't always expect to be ranked based on best case scenario.

Yeah, they ranked us low on backfield because they expect us to fumble with the new system and we've got two new starters. I'm not sweating that, and they even admitted it was a foolish pick.

I'm not sweating #5 coach either, because of who's ahead of us in their rank. Bowden because they expect Clemson to do well, Beamer because he's Beamer, Groh because of the "more with less" thing, and Butch Davis because of playing for a couple National Championships. The flipside of the #5 ranking is that it's much higher than Gailey would have got, and it's nice being ranked higher than Bobby Bowden, Ralph Freidgen, David Cuttcliffe, and in the top half of the ACC, without him ever coaching a single snap at the BCS level.

The rest of the rankings were well justified, and I actually think he ranked us too high at WR. We'll see.

It was a function of Tenuta's scheme. He rarely provided any help to the DBs and if the blitz wasn't working then they were left on islands out there. They may not be as bad as we think...

Completely agree...but on paper and in highlights our DBs were not very good. Thus the ranking.
