The only question I'd expect a non-football person would know as a matter of general sports knowledge is the fair catch question, simply because it is a game mechanic that occurs a lot. I don't see how a non-fan could be expected to know what team Landry coached for or who the Purple People Eaters were. Similarly, option and offsetting penalties are something only people who really pay attention to the game would pick up on. If you "watch" the games, but in reality are just socializing and cheering after a TD because it is the thing to do, then you aren't going to pick up on what option and offsetting penalties are.

My best guess is in most cases it's as simple as they didn't enjoy sports as kids because they sucked at them. You don't appreciate the athletic feats of others if you weren't involved in athletics yourself. I also think many women don't enjoy competition and victory the way men do.

For some people, I think it is not that they don't like sports, it is that the sports they do like are not popular. For example, someone might like swimming or figure skating. Since they won't watch the ballgame because they don't like it, it might be erroneously assumed that they don't like sports at all.

For others, it may be that they don't have an issue with the sport itself as they do with things related to it. For example, my father used to not be able to watch football because seeing a player celebrating after a sack or TD drove him up the wall for some reason. So, he didn't like the game for reasons unrelated to the game itself.

They are competing on a general knowledge trivia show. It should be expected that they will get some questions on sports.

That would be like going to a spelling bee and not knowing how to spell lacrosse because you don’t like sports.
