There are some football techs on this board that I really respect. Here is my request: give me technical, football reasons why we have a real shot at the dogs? I understand the emotional aspect but I want to dwell this week on the technical reasons we have a shot. I see them (dogs) on TV and think they all look like genetic freaks in size, speed and football ability. I don't think our Jackets "look" that way, but who really knows when you don't see them side by side, etc.

I just want to think about some of the areas that we are actually better or at least as good as those guys.

Their board shows us absolutely no respect. It is as if beating us is their birthright. I so want to make them hurt. I want their immediate and extended families to feel the pain (just as I and my family have felt pain for 5 years).

I get so sidetracked with the emotional stuff and I really would appreciate comments on the technical stuff.

I will be there Saturday. I will be in Jacksonville the week after and, hopefully, in Miami. If the Jackets go, I will be there if I have to crawl on broken glass.

I sat at the Tech game yesterday with a guy who is a UGAy season ticket holder. He went to Tech and his wife to UGAy. He's been to several GT games this year and UGAy games.

He's says Tech is definitely a better team than UGAy this year.

My reasons: qb play has been horrible at UGAy this year. Their offense has been dumbed down to a vanilla offense to accomidate a freshamn and three starters this year.

UGAys defense is just not nearly as good now as under Van Gorder.

Tenuta will have a UGAy qb fit to be tied with his numerous blitz packages.

Calvin Johnson.

I am sure we will see Stafford running his draw when he thinks he has picked up our blitzes from the edges.
I have reasonable faith that Tenuta has/is and will study the uga/au film.

Well, both of you could be right. First, in terms of size, speed, and talent, they have us beat.

But as you noted, they have struggled mightily with defense and QB play. Hopefully we can get to Stafford and rattle him early, not letting him get much confidence.

What scares me is their DLine against our Offense. Johnson and Moses will try to stuff TC and pressure Reggie ala Clemson. If they do, and we fall behind, I want to see TB in the second half.

Looks like the game will come down to the composure and execution of the quarterbacks.

They do have better pure athletes than we do...as does Miami and FSU. Matter of fact, I bet Miami and FSU have more players taken in the draft than us this year as well.

The best athletes do not necessarily make the best team. The only concern on our side I have is if we are without Cox and Matthews because that will significantly hamper both our running game and passing game...it will limit us to more vanilla play calling. On the UGA side the big plus for them is if Stafford decides to show up.

But make no mistake...they have the athletes...but watch this video and you see where the difference has been on the field thus far this year...

Two words: Durant Brooks

Last year the game was won and lost on field position. The two teams combined for what... 19 punts last year? A great punter will be a huge asset in this game.

Also, with UGA having a green quarterback, it will be easier for Tenuta to rattle him with complex defensive packages. If Stafford's performance starts to go South, I'd be less inclined to worry about him getting back on the proverbial horse.

UGA doesn't have better athletes than we do... they had better recruiting classes. The parity between talent in today's college football world is very very close.

As far as Tech speak goes, here it goes for me.

When we are on offense:
Their DLine is big and fast and could man handle our OLine. Our tackles will have their toughest day against Quinton Moses who next to Gaines from Clemson is the best DE we'll face all season. Charles Johnson is no slouch either and he'll be tough.

They don't bltiz much and more than likely won't. Richt knows that he can send his LB's into coverage underneath while he disguises his man to man and zone coverages in the secondary to confuse Reggie. He'll wait for Ball to make mistakes.

We can run against UGA. If we can establish a rushing attack which shouldn't be much of a problem, we can open up the play action pass. That said, we hardly ever play action pass. Reggie from the shotgun with the option to run the draw seems to be the only thing we do to keep defenses honest. I imagine more of the same.

If we can mix it up with QB draws, and Choice is able to get some yards, we should have a field day as far as controlling the Ball tempo. Then again, Reggie Ball is our QB and for this game he tends to play with so much emotion he could do something unbelievably stupid. Reggie needs to contain his emotion go out and do his job. If he is capable of doing that (which remains to be seen) we have the ability to beat UGA bad. But we also have the capablity of flushing this season down the toilet.

Our defensive line will be facing one of the least experienced olines of the year. I look for us to completely blow up their QB with our blitz packages. UGA will only have a good game offensively if their FR QB can pick up our blitz (which won't happen), BUT if he is able to run when the pressure is on, they could move the ball. I don't see them running much successfulyl on us. Their receivers have been highly overrated. Massoquai is the only guy that scares me, and he drops way too many balls. They have a stable of running backs, but last I checked, in order to run successfully against us you need one of two things.
1.) A BIG Strong OLIne
or 2.) An experienced OLIne.

UGA has neither.

We need to go into this game and clean house. We better beat the piss out of UGA, because in my opinion unless we do that, then this season will have no justification. We'll be another ok team in a weak conference.

BOR called it

This is where the rubber meets the road in our season.Ala just suffered the humiliation of FIVE straight defeats-so "fear the thumb"
AGAIN this really comes down to Reggie.can he perform? We have been lucky with injuries and now Cox/matthews out.uga will load the box and I doubt our O line can overcome that.so it is back to RB.
It will be low scoring with STs probably the decider.I hope we don't have to hit a 40 yd FG at end to win.
Without this win,the season really becomes another ok season unless we can win BOTH ACC champ AND Bowl game as far I am concerned.

.

would you like to wager as to who has more players taken in the NFL draft? :fingersx:

In general, UGA is not the same caliber team as they were when Greene and Pollack played. UGA's QB situation has been in a state of flux for most of the season and Stafford only recently solidified his QB role in the UGA/Auburn game. I think Tenuta's defense will have a field day with Stafford and he won't be able to readily adjust to our LBs blitzing.

Additionally, it appears that Lumpkin is the most stable and productive RB they have. Keying on him should slow their running game down considerably. Besides, our defense is legendary.... nuf said!

Blue graduated and their defensive secondary does not appear to be as strong this year. Calvin can beat any one of their DBs and can help us enormously if Reggie can just get him the ball.

THWG!!!!

Agree with the rest, but Lumpkin has run all over us.

This year? Yeah, I'll take that bet. Who do they have that's coming out? Quinton Moses... and who else? Lets see, we have K. Scott, Joe Anaoi, K-Mike, and more than likely Calvin Johnson. We also have Wrotto, Matthews, and Cooper any of which might slip into a draft day pick.

I checked out Scott Wright's Draft site and he had the following position rankings for seniors.

UGA:
Quentin Moses #2 DE
Martrez Milner #5 TE
Nick Jones #10 C
Tony Taylor #12 OLB
Daniel Inman #14 OT

GT:
Kamichael Hall #6 OLB
Mansfield Wrotto #8 OG
Kenny Scott #17 CB

Underclassman to watch:
Charles Johnson, DE at UGA
Calvin Johnson, WR at GT

I was surprised to see Joe Anoai to not be on the list. We will see how his combine goes.
One thing is for sure, after being snubbed in several drafts..the performance of last years less-heralded picks in terms of preparedness will help our kids in the future. The Ravens HC pointed to GT and stated that we must being doing something right because Daniels and Landry were ready for the practice regimen and game plan.

Look at the last two games. Take away two stupid plays in the fourth quarter and either of those games could have been ours.

We're better now and they're worse. We SHOULD win this game.

Very good point knox.

Why do I live in a dream world, because I know we have better talent right now than UGA?

So you think they have more talent than we do? They have more potential than we do. That POTENTIAL hasn't been developed into Talent yet. Hence why they have had top recruiting classes and relatively young team.

No, because you use words like "know" instead of "think"...Mike

This game will depend on how the QB's play. If we can get Stafford rattled, we will be hard to beat. If Reggie succumbs to his emotions like he has in the past in this game, it will be another dogfight.

1. UGA has had close games or losses against 2-9 Colorado, 3-8 Ole Miss, 4-8 Vandy, 3-8 MSU and 7-4 Kentucky (well, I had no clue that Kentucky is now 7-4, but past Georgia they've beaten absolutely nobody). While GT hasn't exactly looked like world-beaters in all their games, they've only had one close game against a clearly inferior team, UNC. Maryland is now ranked and NC State beat BC this year. Colorado, Ole Miss, Vandy, MSU and Kentucky can't claim anything similar.

2. Reggie will run again. Nix didn't call the QB runs agaisnt Duke only because he didn't have to.

3. Matt Stafford had eight interceptions in three games before the Auburn game and, as we've found out from Reggie, one good game does not mean he will always have that kind of game.

4. UGA was helped considerably by the interceptions that Cox threw on Saturday. I can't guarantee for sure that Reggie won't lay a complete egg like Cox did, but I think he's gotten to the point now that the interceptions are pretty contained.

5. UGA also completed a few long passes against Auburn when Auburn blitzed. Our zone coverage on blitzes is designed to only give up short and medium passes and not long ones. I'm fairly confident that Stafford and his receivers will still not be able to consistently put together a long drive consisting of short and medium passes against our blitz.

Take all that FWIW. The only matchup I really see favoring UGA this year is our OL against their DL. It could be enough to negate all the other advantages that we have, but I think we'll find a way around it like we did against Miami's DL.
