I remember the time when Tech often used just the T instead of the interlocked GT (which has also changed over time). Look at the picture of the Bulldog with the T sweater on below.

Personally, I think "The I" is funny, but not that marketable. However "TECH" was ours and we used to be THE "Tech". VPI, Texas Tech, etc. all had different names or had programs that lagged ours in recognition. We were "TECH". Today we're losing that to VPI, which is one reason I didn't agree with them joining the ACC. It pains me to read in the Baltimore paper "Tech" being used in an article on VPI now, when just five years ago that would be referring to us.

I think we should consider marketing "TECH" a whole lot more or we're completely going to lose the , and encourage our players to just say "TECH", etc. We need to shake the whole VPI folks grabbing on to our coattails. Any opinions out there?

I hear what you are saying but it won't work. TECH will always be used by locals, wherever they are, to reference the significant "TECH" in their area. And the fans in places where no prevalent "TECH" team is located will specify which TECH they are referring to. To try to market the "TECH" name nation wide would be a wasted effort in my opinion.

I'm certainly not suggesting we go into Virginia and change all their sportswriters mind on who TECH is. But in Indiana, New York, and California, why give it up so easy? We used to be TECH, not just the Tech flavor of the day.

The second part to this post is why did we give up being The Ramblin Wreck? Old guys always see me and exclaim "The Ramblin Wreck!". New guys would never say "Yellow Jackets!". Why are we giving on on either name, TECH and RAMBLIN WRECK? They were both charming and memorable for fans across the world.

We also were called the Golden Tarnado at one time which I like.

Most guys I talk to know about the "Ramblin Wreck." Plus, sports announcers always try to through "Ramblin Wreck from Georgia Tech" in one of their sentences.

Maybe I misunderstood what you meant. If so, my bad.

Roy, in our official program, etc. our nickname was The Ramblin Wreck, today it's the Yellow Jackets. We are letting the Ramblin Wreck go as our nickname. In the 70's and 80's, it was reversed: The Ramblin Wreck was our official nickname, the Yellow Jackets was an unofficial one. Today it has reversed and I'm wondering why.

But the post was why are we letting TECH and Ramblin Wreck go away? I don't agree with it.

My guess is a Yellow Jacket is a better mascot than a car. I personally like the car better. Ramblin' Wreck will always be a part of TECH - just look at all of the "Wreck Tech" signs in Athens on Turkey weekend.

Just got back from work and while there I was respectfully called a "ramblin wreck from GT" by a customer of mine.

I agree that Ramblin' Wreck is a much more distinctive--and therefore better--mascot. Every other team is "the Bulldogs" or "Tigers." There's only one RW.

Unique and interesting:
Florida State - seminoles
Georgia Tech - RW
Maryland - terrapins
North Carolina - tarheels
Virginia - cavaliers / wahoos
Virginia Tech - hokies
Wake Forest - demon deacons

Boring and tired:
Boston College - iggles
Clemson - tiggers
Duke - boo devils
Miami - hurrycanes
NC State - wolfpuck

Maybe this should be how the divsions are broken out!

Actually, I remember seeing somewhere that the "Ramblin Wreck" is still technically one of our official mascots according to the school. Something like ESPN wouldn't have it, because they probably just look at the nickname. I don't remember where I saw it, so I might be full of crap.

Is this the "T" you are talking about?

I also like that "T".

Can you imagine the Ramblin Wreck starting at midfield and crashing into the goal post before the game....or passing it up to the top of the lower east stands from the first row! :laugher:

Yes, that's quite an image...but can we repair the Wreck in time for the next game? :laugher:
