For those wondering why the defense is better...

This may or may not be true, but I took the red pill this morning...

Branch and Simmons are a big part followed by these scheme changes:

  • CB press coverage versus 10 yards off the wide receiver... although there needs to be some change up to keep them guessing
  • Both safeties are not 15-20 yards off the ball back peddling at the snap (this is big, GT has been effectively playing with two less people on defense)
  • CB blitzs are now in the plan
  • GT has more blitz schemes than two LBs running up the center that each run into a blocker
  • GT does not tell the opposing offense when they are going to blitz their one blitz scheme that the other team has been scheming during their bye week. (GT hides the blitz intention better this year)
  • When they do telegraph the blitz they change out of the blitz from time to time
  • GT guards the 1st down line of gain not 10 yards past the 1st down line
I also heard that they simplified the defense to allow the team to play faster.

I've noticed this change. Now when we get caught showing a blitz, we look to the sideline to see if we're still blitzing. And sometimes it seems like the players decide on their own not to blitz after showing blitz--maybe they were just faking a blitz to begin with.

Not sure if joke

I think the wrong set and personnel were stuck out there on that drive in the 2nd quarter. When the O doesn't do subs in a no-huddle offense, it's very hard for the D to do subs. We got penalized once for 12 men on the field.

About 80 percent of your post is wrong.

We still show our blitz every time
We still blitz from LB up the middle every time
We fire a corner about once a game and against Wake it cost us a TD (slant on Lawrence Austin)
We still play 10 yards off (this week we played SOME press for the first time all year)

Well aren't you a smart asshole!

100 percent of my post is right 50 percent of the time. But, I feel my post is right in identifying the changes that have improved the defense.

I did not say the defense changed all the time. This is the difference I see on a whole, not on a play by play basis... last drive of the Miami game was not press or blitz.

1st half of WF is a perfect example as well. I saw several of the 2 LB charge up the middle blitzs. I also saw Vic, beat his block to make a sack. But, I did see many blitz’s telegraphed and not checked out. Perhaps this is due to the loss of Mitchell. I was going to note this in my post, but decided not to on the basis of time.

There was also too much press coverage in the second half. In my opinion, GT should have varied the CB press distance and shuffled the distance during the offensive “snap read/play call”. But, no one in their right mind should pay me 800k to plan defense and WF only scored 3 points. I would pay to see more deception in our defense.

I am not a defensive expert. But, I do know last year Gray and Griffen where “absent” because they where 20 yards down field from the LOS. This is ok to change things up to prevent deep plays, but not all the time. GT started to get them in the game last part of 2016 by moving them up.

Also, there is risk and reward. If you blitz your CB you may blow up a play, but you may give up yards. I will take that over a 10 play drive paper cut death on every series like last year.

You don’t do this every play, but as a change up to keep the offense off balance.

I’m no defensive expert or rocket scientist, but why did it take so long to come to conclusions like a 10 yard cushion for receivers on 3rd and 7 was not good?

@Longestdays First off: Welcome back! Hope the cruise was fun!

Second: Agreed. The need to press more has been evident, and we looked to be falling back in to that at the end of the WF game, but held... I remember saying quite a few times "Don't go prevent, Ted..." I think the DBs are a secret weapon going in to Clemson. We may not "out talent" their wide receivers, but I think we can outscheme the QB and his passing ability. If we make a few reads properly, we may be able to pick one or two off. Although with Ettiene(sp?) in the game, we will need to have a couple of the DBs up in run support. He can't get in the open field.

We were more aggressive vs Wake and it was one of our worst games defensively this year (based on stats) but I’m with you that we should gamble against the back half of this thing where we are out atheleted in at least half the games. I think to have a prayer against georgia or clemson we have to gamble. Where I disagreed with your post is that this is why the defense has been better to this point. Those problems are still there, but we are better in the back and front 4 and that is making a huge difference. Our rush defense...to this point...has improved the most over previous years and this has to do with depth up front more so than scheme. We are pressuring the qb and while we are getting burned some, sans Tennessee we are tackling better in the open field in the back 4. LB’s are playing avg which is better than expected

I am not either taking up for Ted Roof, or talking him down. But I wonder if people realize he isn't playing with 4 and 5 star talent. Several guys who are playing were basically recruited by SoCon schools. I live in North Florida, and frankly you ought to see the crap that FSU is getting from their fanbase the way their 5 star guys are playing. Right now Tech would likely beat the brakes off of them.

I don’t know if you guys realize it, but sometimes you show a blitz and don’t, sometimes you don’t show a blitz but blitz, and sometimes you show a blitz and then you blitz.

No poker players around here eh?
