Another great article from Van Brimmer:

http://www.macon.com/169/story/150377.html

Some quotes:

... I hope [Tenuta] gets a head job soon so I don't have to go against him anymore," Friedgen said.
Personality is important in head coaches, said Georgia Tech athletics director Dan Radakovich. He looks for five things in head coaching candidate, and three of them involve people skills: an ability to deal with staff, players and parents; an ability to represent the program in public and feel comfortable doing it; and an ability to work with the media.

Yeah, great article, but I hate hearing all the time that he really wants a HC position. We all know it, but I almost feel that the more it is put out there, the more likely it is to happen. Tenuta has been a great thing for GT over the past couple of years and I would hate to see him leave.

Those people skills are interesting considering our current HC doesn't really fit that mold.

You may as well stop worrying. Like Ralph when he was here, the only question is when Tenuta will move on. It's the natural job progression for football coaches and we should be happy for him.

I can't imagine that if DRad had been the AD when we were replacing O'Leary that Chan would have been his choice. That said, there's nothing to say they can't work together as long as we're getting the results that DRad feels we need to have both on and off the field.

Knoxjacket, you are so full of BS, it is ridiculous.
Are you actually going to argue that Chan is either a good public speaker or comfortable with the media? I'd sure love to see someone try to make that argument and I think you may be just dense enough to attempt it.

He is incredible with players and parents first of all...they love him. Extremely trustworthy. He is an excellent closer in recruiting.

Second...high school coaches love Gailey. They find him trustworthy and know he is straight shooting their kids.

With the media he is fine...hardly uncomfortable as he has done it for 20 years. One may not like the southern accent on a national scale....but he certainly does not avoid the media, dodge questions...and he never belittles the media...he treats them with respect (which Rad likes).

With alumni CG is great. Now...he does not kiss butt to a couple of weathly ones which some did not initially like. It is not that he avoids them...he just treats everyone equal regardless of your giving level. Fortunately Rad steps in comfortably to handle those butt kissing deals (Braine did not). Any alumni or fan that has spent time with CG face to face...or had him speak to a small gathering...comes away liking him.

You may want to question X's and O's sometimes...like people do all coaches...but you cannot question is ability to deal effectively with Johnny Q Public.

knox,

That's public speaking skills, not people skills. Stay focused.

Can someone help me out here...

Every time we get a really excellent coordinator, the discussion immediately shifts to "When is he going to get a head coaching spot?"

Fridge, Edsall, and now Tenuta.

Bud Foster and Mikey Andrews are pretty good DCs. Why does the discussion never come up with them. Norm Chow was pretty good but his name was never mentioned as "next in line for a HC position."

Don't get me wrong, tho - if that's what CJT wants then I would wish him the best and be very grateful for what he has and has yet to accomplish here and have no ill feelings about it.

It would just be nice, I suppose, if we could get some really good coordinator talent who are happy being coordinators like the examples I mentioned.

Besides, while I like Chan Gailey, his confidence in Nix leads me to give him (Gailey) a vote of no confidence when it comes to choosing coordinators.

Yeah, lashing out at the media after you beat an overrated Miami team shows excellent tact with the media (as well as humility and class ).

I have heard all those names mentioned as prospects for HC positions. I think your perception is skewed as you are more aware of those courting GT assistants.

It isn't a bad thing to be regarded as a jumping off point for advancement. In theory, it should be that much easier to attract quality replacements if the position isn't a dead end.

However, you are dependent on the HC to have a good nose for talent and to be confident enough to hire people good enough to challenge him.

Doesn't surprise me that Adam Van Brimmer who 2 years ago voted all SEC schools in his top 5 teams in the final AP poll and who is a UGA homer, is writing articles in favor of Tenuta. I don't remember these articles being written about Van Gorder a few years ago.

I still remember the guy Gailey wanted to hire as DC when he took the Tech job - Rick Smith. He seemed like a very good candidate. I didn't realize until now that he coached at Tech before. I wonder if we'd reconsider him if Tenuta left. I think he's probably fixed his resume by now. ;)

We must be on different planets. Everyone and their mother seem to have Norm Chow on their short list, every year. But like the Fridge, he doesn't seem to get past that initial stage. Most likely it is his west coast preference. Someone is going to hire him sooner or later. And again, like the Fridge, it is going to pay off.

As for Bud Foster and Mikey Andrews, they have been considered in the past, but both seem to be waiting out their current head coaches hoping to take over their current programs. Mikey may have gotten hosed on that count. If Fisher can bring FSU back on offense, he might be the man in line after BB.

What crack are you smoking? Chan's people skills are top notch. He just gets crapped on by the FOM crowd who harsh on him for misplacing punctuation marks and crap. Just last week we had a thread here on Stingtalk trying to railroad him for using the word "positive" referring to a test instead of a prognosis.

CHAN MISPLACED A SEMICOLON, HE MUST BE FIRED.

What crack are you smoking? Norm Chow was mentioned repeatedly as the next in line for a HC position, even among Tech people.

Bud Foster wants to be a Head Coach too:

is there someone here who does not want a job that pays 3x's their current salary?

Isn't that the same argument for Calvin playing his Sr season?
