First of all, let me something to our poor points production last year. Looking at the yards gained throughout last season, we weren't that horrible in relation to other ACC teams, but we dropped off suddenly in the points column. I admit it was a major problem. Sure, you wouldn't expect 25 points against Miami or Georgia last year, but we didn't get it done against the likes of Virginia and NC State.
This happened for two reasons:
- We missed so many field goals throughout the year, costing us one, maybe two games over the season (Thanks Dave Wilson).
- We did awful in the Red Zone and short yardage situations. Without being able to stretch the field, our OL had problems playing the other defense straight up.
Now, I want to continue to the ND game, and point out something that everybody is missing. While we scored 10, the almighty hailed offense of ND also scored 14, way below average and something to be ashamed of, right? Was it Quinn, or the OL, or Weis that was the problem?
Instead they scored 14 (although I admit it should have been 20) for a distinct reason: Weis played the time of possession perfectly in the second half, getting multiple third down conversions for 10+ play drives. His long drives killed both the crowd and the defense. The 14-10 score did NOT happen due to Chan acting in a vacuum and actually happened because of Weis moreso than Chan.
Of course, I wish we were on the other side of that TOP battle, but their defense did an excellent job of stuffing us in short yardage situations and ending our drives. I mean, we actually just had one 3 and out that game, but inevitably we couldn't keep drives alive while ND could.
