A subject off the beaten path for me. I was wondering if there were any future plans for stadium expansion / renovation out there? This year was my first trip to Bobby Dodd and I had a great time but I was interested if there were any plans to "fill in" the rest of the stadium or renovate anything? (not saying that it needs it just asking because i'm interested.)

Not untill we can fill in the empty seats we've already got.

I don't think we could afford anything else like that right now, could we?

beej and Jacket make good points about attendance and $$$'s.

This will never happen, but if anything I wish GT could get a mulligan --a do-over-- with the North stands. To me the structure just doesn't fit well with the rest of the stadium.

GT65: Is a stickler for symmetry.

If it does eventually happen, the first spot would likely be filling in the gap in the northwest corner. But we will need a number of years of sellouts probably before that will happen. We won't make the mistake again of needlessly going into debt.

Everything above, and also half(at least) of the newly added seats that we DO sell go to U[sic]GA, Clemson, etc. fans, so it's not just a simple matter of selling out the stadium.

Thanks guys, this was not a loaded setup question for my next statement but before PJ came here the highest GT related priority on my mind was getting a game with GSU in Bobby Dodd, I assure you it would sell out if it were the opening game. We usually bring about 25K to a UGA game. That is extremely sad to admit because our largest home game attendance was just over 25K.

Exactly. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the planning for the expansion was done around the boom of 98-01, when it seemed like we were about to be a perrenial contender in the ACC as well as the nation. Obviously things went downhill fast, but if we were back in that position it'd be a lot more likely that those huge blotches of orange and red that dominate the upper north would shrink.

We just renovated the stadium 5 years ago and added the north deck. Its not going to be renovated anytime soon. We're still paying the deficit off created from the expansion 5 years ago.

It will be a while before an expansion, we have to prove we need it first and sell out for a few years. We have some type of upgrades every year, this year there will be many new things: renovation of bathrooms, renovate concession stands, adding ribbon boards, new sound system which is needed badly, state of the art video screen that will trump the old one.

A part of the reason the stadium was done the way it was (at least not actually connecting to the west stands) is b/c if we did we'd have to bring the west stands up to code, which would be a major undertaking.

That's exciting news. We really don't need more seats, but improving the all around atmosphere and game experience will be a big plus.

We need one of those big widescreen models, like they have in the new NFL stadiums.
What are we doing with the old one? If they put it out by the curb, let me know when, I'll go pick it up that night.

Dont forget adding a two story "ADT Trophy" Trohpy Case for the next few years ;)

This is my pet peeve subject!!!!!!!

We need to fix our currently ungodly ugly stadium. Want more butts in seats? Create more sideline seats -- not craptastic nosebleed endzone seats.

Given that GT architects built most of the downtown Atlanta skyline, it's embarrising how ugly BDS is.

Current configuration:

My proposal is a return to the horseshoe, only done properly. The Edge Center and Wardlaw Building would be torn down and replaced by a new larger endzone building that also serves to close the open end of the horseshoe and keep the noise up. The stadium isn't just "bare metal" on the outside. It's built up with a brick exterior, and the inner space is put to use for not just concessions, but weight rooms, etc. Think how Doak Campbell looks from the outside. I'd estimate capacity of this reconfiguration to be 60,000. I believe there's sufficient space behind the current west sideline to add a third sideline only teir if necessary.

Oh my God.

I've never liked the idea of "horseshoe" stadiums. Mostly a personal preference, but still, I think that if we do expand the stadium someday, it should be fully enclosed. That's the easiest way to get extra seating in. Plus, I love the fact that we have two raucous student sections in both the North and South endzones.
