I know this title sounds like an oxymoron but I've seen a couple of items about it in the last day or so.

Seems like their powers-that-be have hired Dan Reaves to consult on the viability of such a program and the finaancial commitment to it;also seems the 'dome would be their stadium ?

Anyone else heard anything or care to comment on it? Could be interesting given their alumni base in the area...
THWG!!

Well speaking as a GSU alumnus, I would like to see them get a team together, but NOT a Div. 1-A team. If they get enough financial support (and GSU has a BIG alumni base), they could be tough competition given that they too are in metro Atlanta and have many more majors to offer a potential student-athlete. They've come a long way in basketball (made the Big dance a couple of years ago).

Of course they don't have the history, tradition, or academic clout that GT has, but they COULD be a player.

I remember hearing rumor of this a couple of years ago. If the financial committment is there then I see no reason why they couldn't build a semi-sucessful program there. I wonder if Coach Reeves would consider getting the program off the ground by head coaching for the first few years. Georgia Southern better get their act together, because a Reeves coached Panthers could cut into their recruiting. I know that they tend to recruit from south Georgia and north Florida, but this could hurt them with the handful of kids that they get from the Atlanta area.

Goldeagle, I see that you are from Forsyth and I know that GSU loves getting kids from Mary Persons. I would think that a lot of the boys from your area may be more likely to choose Atlanta and the Dome over Statesboro.

By the way, I went to Middle School and High School at both MP and Monroe Academy respectively.

If they are serious about this, getting Dan Reeves to head this up(and hopefully coach it) is the best thing they could have done. Everyone wants to play for a former NFL coach.

If this financial clout is viable, why is it then not applied to the basketball, golf, or baseball programs?

Especially basketball.

What is so different about GSU, and say, DePaul, Marquette, St Johns?

It seems those sports are a lot more viable ways to build school spirit than the monstrous financial weight of trying to build a football program right now.

The difference is, GSU is in Georgia.

No kidding. Like maybe building a basketball arena that's not a glorified gym on the third floor of an office building!

It actually looks like baseball, and especially golf are starting to take care of themselves over there, but they need a new arena big time.

Cool idea to play the football games at the GA Dome, though.

I know a lot of smaller programs in big cities play in an NFL stadium (Tulane in the Superdome, Tennessee State in LP Field Nashville, even Pitt plays at Heinz Field). Sometimes it looks funny to have 18,000 people in a 66,000 stadium, though.
